The European Commission and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) have given the South African government R1.3-billion for a programme to find "innovative ways" of creating jobs.

The grant will be used to "assist the economic sector departments of the South African government", to accelerate the economic growth rate and "provide more and better jobs for poor people".

"With the global economic downturn, the launch of the programme is a timely initiative to help create jobs and propose innovative ways for reducing unemployment," DFID Southern Africa head Helen Mealins said in a statement released at a summit between leaders of the EU and South Africa outside Cape Town.

Mealins said the programme would contribute to a better quality of life for people in South Africa and the region.

The money will be used by the economic departments to promote skills development and initiate programmes that expand the capacity of the "productive economy".

"National government departments will be able to access funds in order to partner provincial and local government research institutions, the private sector, labour and civil society, to promote dialogue and find innovative ways of stimulating higher economic growth and employment," the EU and South African government said in a joint statement.

Good news :) Assuming none of the money gets used to line certain people's coffers.

Keep in mind, they need 1st class transport to these workshops, and there needs to be 5 star accommodation. Also, every night needs a party and entertainment. And, lets not forget, you need a memento when you leave.

well have you guys forgotten that some people are suing large corporations in the states for doing work with the apartheid government so the british are running scared and handing us money so we don't sue them too.

Party time!!

They'll probably have to budget for the odd liver transplant and legal costs to protect the [-]comrades[/-] innocent.

Those "workshops" can get really hectic, sometimes. :D

I remember one workshop I attended, where a head of a department, staggered out the dining room, with two 5lt boxes of wine under her arms, trying to carry two plates of heaped food, while pissed as a Motala. (No, I will not name and shame the person/company)
