Hi guys,

I've finally decided its time to upgrade my monster of a 54cm Samsung tv. Now comes the question, what do one buy? First of all my budget is R15000-R16000. I will watch a wide variety of content on the tv. From sports, mini series, movie magic, dvd's,blue ray, and i would like to connect my sony vaio laptop to it so i can play music/movies(avi's etc) and whatever. I currently stay in a bachelors flat, so my viewing distance from the wall where i want to mount it will be +-2.5m-3.0m. I will however be moving to a bigger place next year some time. So I've narrowed it down to 2 options..either a Samsung 40" LED(UA40B6000VR) or Samsung 46" LCD(LA46B650T1R) tv? What are you guys take on this? How noticable are the picture quality between the 2 in real life? Or recommend me a tv a should consider.

Thanks in advance.

The Samsung and Sony LED TV's are a TV Lovers' wet dream!
If you can afford it go for LED, or wait till next year (When you move) and get yourself a 3D TV When they are finally released.
By that time you should have saved enough to be able to afford one...

For future investment, go 3D LED...

Tough spot though, I'd love a 46" but I'd also love an LED... It's your take mate, if size matters, go LCD... IF you want picture clarity and less strain on your bill, go LED

16K is huge amount to drop on a TV. Great that you can afford that much. I'd wait for the whole 3D thing to sort itself out, and for the new 3D TVs to get launched and for standards to be set. You don't want to be blowing that much cash on something that'll be outdated in a few months time.

Maybe you should buy a cheaper 32" LCD TV in the meantime. They go for about 5K. You can use that as your main TV in the meantime, and then when you get the more expensive bigger 3D LED TV, you can sell the 32" and use the cash to fund a nice HTS, or move it into your bedroom...

Where do you get this ...

or Samsung 46" LCD(LA46B650T1R) tv?

For this ...

First of all my budget is R15000-R16000

I admit that I have looked in the past few months, but the cheapest I've seen this now was a Christmas special at R20,000.00 Back in November it was listed at R25,000.00 retail ...

That aside, a very very awesome TV. Comparison in IQ between the above Samsung LCD and a Samsung LED is extremly small. Read the reviews and - apart from being awesome - they compare it to some big competition. It's was also rated amoungst the best LCD TVs a few months back with some the deepest blacks on an LCD.

Quality aside, you'll get DLNA, USB, Internet TV, DVB, media capabilities etc

I saw a 40" 3D Samsung TV advertised in the HiFi Corp pamphlet (pre order) for R 24 000

Yep, I've had a look at the new 3D LED Screens..can get them from audiovision and the new Samsung stores..Cost is R24000 for the 40". My take on the whole 3D thing is, you need those 3D glasses to see it and i'm not willing to buy more than 2 of those glasses. It costs R1200 each.So then you are already at R26400 for the setup. Then if you are more than 2 people watching tv, you cant in 3d, because only 2 will be wearing glasses and the image will be blurry to the rest. And the first time i saw it, i thought.."cool n can see depth in the tv and the images looks 3D"..but its not really that amazing as in the movies where stuff comes flying towards you etc etc.. And also that was watching a 3D Movie..the tv also has the ability to convert a normal 2D image to 3D..from what i could see, it was not looking as good as the 3D designed movie we watched. So i would say this is still relatively new technology and not fully proven yet, and a bit pricy..so i think for now i would rather just go with a conventional LCD or LED..and another thing is that in the technology field, and i might contradict myself here, you cant really say you are gonna wait for something to get cheaper or better or waiting for the new technology..because then you'll wait forever and end up never buying anything. Thats why i say, save up a certain amount you are willing to spend on something..once you have it in your hand, do some market research and see what is the best deal you can get for your money and go buy it. Unfortunatly, i have to decide size over quality now. 40" LED or 46" LCD..so was looking for some real life experiences with these sets, because you dont really get the whole picture when the tv is in the store..only when you get home you realize, damn i should've done this or that. Like how would a normal SD dstv feed look strecthed over 46" LCD vs the 40" LED etc etc. or would the size difference be that big to justify rather going with the 46" because of the overall viewing experience you will get.

oh yeah another thing, where can one get the latest hifi corp specials online? or is there any other av shops online one can have a look at for specials on tv's?

With that cash 40" 3D LED should be buyable in a few months, be patient!

take hi-fi corps price list and get Game to beat that!

Cool, i was actually not aware of that policy. one question though..what if hifi-corp have a tv i want but game does not stock the same model.i presume the policy wouldn't apply then? i noticed the Samsung 40" LED Series 5 special game has on now for R13999..pity its only a 50hz panel

Dude, get the 46 inch LCD.
There are some amazing LCD's out there, that might just actually be better than the LED hype.
For the same quash, you could get a better LCD, tech, Hz, etc, and size for the same lower end LED.

I'd go for size. Got my 50" plasma, and wish it was bigger.

Do you have an hdmi amp 5.1 or 7.1 to go with that, I don't see the point in having a fancy HD TV for Blu Ray and nothing for the sound?
The sound is often the best part........

pull the trigger NOW on a 40'' LCD with like 100Hz tech which you can move to a bedroom once you move....then get a real bad boy 50'' screen for the lounge....use the rest to buy a decent soundsystem. R9k for good screen, and R7k for good sound system...

LED is overrated and is marketed as OLED....leka scam if you ask me....I'm waiting for those LCDs no-one wants cause they want so 'fancy LED'....

I'm also leaning more towards the 46" now. Realized once i move into another place, i'll start needing cash for other furniture etc etc. So rather want to buy once and not again for some time after that.

In regards to the sound system, i don't have at the moment but i will def start building one after i got the tv as i agree you need decent sound else you won't get the whole experience. I am looking at the Denon AVR-1910 receiver and then still need to find some speakers. Audio Vision has this Acoustic Research package which is your 2 floorstanders, center, surround and subwoofer package going for R7000.. what do you guys think about that? Else i'm thinking of getting the Wharfedale Evo II speakers to go with the amp or even Jamo's from Dion wired. But im not too worried about this atm as i first need to get the tv and then save up again for the sound. I'll be buying the tv end of this month so i'm starting to look around what is available, prices, specs etc.

Thanks for all the input thus far.

Those Evo II speakers are so much better than the others you mention here it's scary.
