Had to perform and emergency format of my machine and didn't back-up my iTunes Library. What a bloody mission to get the songs off the iPod.

Firstly no help in the (I am sad to say that i actually read this) iTunes help manual thingy so took about 30 mins to figure it out.

The whole process is redundant, got to do the same thing like 3 times.

Stupid that if no other iPod is registered with your version of iTunes you still can't sync from your iPod to your Library!

Thank goodness i only have a 2gig if I had a 30 or 80 gig i would be p1ssed!!

Peer pressure... :( :D

Ps: How the savanna's going down tonight?

It's not that iTunes is so stupid really - more the fact that iTunes was made to assume that all users are either extremely ignorant or extremely evil, therefore doing things to "assist" the user or to prevent him from performing "immoral acts" such as copying his own music to his own hard disk.

For instance, iTunes decided to reorganize the physical music directories on my friend's PC one day, attempting to copy about 30GB to the My Documents folder when there was not nearly that much space free on the disk. That was a huge disaster.

I understand the reasoning behind it, but what if i did something stupid like sync before i copied the music? then I would have lost 2 gigs of music and a whole lotta time typing track names (didn't have internet connection when i added music to iTunes)

It is there specifically to stop people from copying music they dont own (that isn't on their computer at least). It is a one way thing. And for good reason.

Sure there are exceptional circumstances, but in those situations it isn't hard to find a piece of software that will copy from your ipod to itunes.

You should have downloaded on of the apps from iLounge.com like iPod->Folder 1.2. They also have a guide at http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-computer/

If you dont want it to do that take the tick out of "Keep iTunes Music Folder organised" in the preference. There's also an option not to "copy files to the iTunes music folder when adding to library".

Is there a program available that is safe to use to copy photos, songs etc from your iPod to your PC almost like some kind of File Explorer.
Do you want to be able to access them on the iPod or just to use it as a storage device?

Calling software stupid because the user doesn't know how to use it properly is stupid.

Sigh.

I have a Camera Connecter for my i-Pod. What happens now is that when I take photos with my Digital Camera and the memory card is full I transfer it to my i-Pod using the Camera Connector. That's when I'm not near my PC/Laptop.

But now the problem is as soon as I connect my i-Pod to my PC/Laptop it ask me to sync and then the pictures that's not on the PC/Laptop gets deleted from my i-Pod.

Hope it makes sense.

Within iTunes, enable drive use. This will require you to manually sync the ipod, and it will also allow you to access the ipod's drive and copy stuff off it.

I agree with tibby for once. In itunes there is a backup feature which you didn't use, that is hardly apple's fault.

And if something had happened to my hard disk? Then the back-up i created would be gone. ( I dont do back-ups to disk every week). Then would have had the same problem as i had last night...

Not blaming apple, if you read further down the first page I mentioned that i understand the reason that it is done like that but it is an annoyance!

and it still would have been your fault. :) We all know hard disks fail - it's just a matter of when. iTunes makes it possible to make incremental backups to cd or dvd.

I understand the fact that it is my responsibility to back-up my files, not my argument!

My statement was about the fact that iTunes doesn't allow the transfer of files from the iPod to iTunes when there is no iPod registered with that version of iTunes.

It was a rant and not an underlying statement about software forsight and back-up procedures.

and just for the record, I THINK iTunes is Stupid. :D
