Anyway to rescan the music library for changes only - similar to what other software has been doing for 10 years?

no there isn't. it will scan the entire folder again. however there is a new feature since iTunes 9. there will an "automatically add to iTunes" folder wherever your music library is. this is like a "watch" folder. put any new music in this folder and it will automatically be moved to your iTunes library in the right place. not what you are looking for i know but hey it helps.

Nope, it doesn't.

If you want a good music player that does ^ that really well. Consider Foobar2000.
