iTunes without anti-piracy software

Now if only something similar could be offered in South Africa I could reduce my pirate-y ways. Arr!

The Rhythm Records website is excellent but no popular foreign/big label local artists makes it less than ideal.

Excellent news, but I would like to know if Apple are going to release a patch of some sort that will un-DRM the music I currently have???

You'll probably have to re-download it.

The DRM-free is only on iTunePlus tracks so you probably have to "upgrade" the song for a small fee. [Insert Evil Laugh]

iTunes Plus tracks are the same price that I originally paid for them $99c...

Bwana > I hope so... do you know if the Movies and series are also DRM free.. been looking around for some info on this?

No iTunes Music Store before we have 5 million broadband subscribers (same as Australia) I would wager.

It is the label reps in South Africa preventing the ITMS from opening here. You wanna circumvent them, head over to 7digital.com

Most of their catalogue is DRM-free (mp3 @ 320) and prices are the same that you would expect to pay at ITMS. They sell to South Africa...

lol.. thats sounds like the typical Core answer to the "why is there no itunes in South Africa" question ... would love to hear from the of the "label reps" as you put it...

You have to upgrade the songs to iTunes Plus tracks and there is a fee attached to it. Upgrading my library is going to cost $82 ... yikes!

No - they're not. I also dont think anyone has gone through the effort of cracking that DRM but I cant be sure.

Personally, I also flat out refuse to pay for broadcast television so my selection of TV series is limited to the occasional freebee.

That was the story that was touted by Apple (US) about 18 or so months ago when asked why ITMS wasn't available in several territories, including SA. In the old days, labels were represented locally by agents and distributors. So for example, if memory serves me correct, Gallo had BMG (now part of sony) and Geffen and would loose out on sales that did not go through their channels.

The fiasco with 94.7's attempt to sell mobile content seems to hold that out. I can't remember all the details, but the biggest obstacles have always been REPORTED to be the labels or their local agents. I would dearly love to hear an explanation from both Core and the labels. The last time Core put a statement out around this, even before apple's, the reps and agents declined to comment, leading credence to the claim. It would be very interesting to know the truth but I doubt we ever will....

Amazon, CD Universe, and 1000 other online retailers mail CDs to South Africa. Why can't the offer legit download services too?

I thought Amazon stopped but that of course is besides the point. You make a valid observation there. This is why I would love to hear from Apple and the Labels - where is ITMS (ZA)???

We have heard the apple/core line but never a response from the labels.

This, btw, is core's words:
(FAQ at ZASTORE)
Can I buy music online from the iTunes Music Store?
At this time, due to the legacy of music distribution rights, the iTunes Music Store only sells to persons whose credit card has a billing address in one of 21 countries. (SA not included) At some point in the future SA may be added, but many larger markets than ourselves, still do not have access to the iTunes store, and so we will have to patiently wait our turn.
Using the iTunes software you can browse the store and listen to 30sec of any song, but persons outside of the 21 countries cannot purchase. You can access & download the hundreds of pod-casts from the store which are free.
If you do not have the iTunes software, you can download it from www.apple.com.

Amazon has a shipping issue with SA. Parcels getting pilfered. Amazon still
ships it's entire Book, DVD and music catalog to SA, but by courier.

Other shops still ship using postal mail or courier. All ship music CDs to
SA from any label, even top 40 Britney Spears stuff.

What Amazon does not do is ship software (incl games) and hardware (incl
electronics) but many Amazon marketplace shops do ship
the above outside of USA. Amazon says they have contractual obligations
preventing the sale of electronics and software outside of USA.

However, CDUniverse will ship any game to you. As mentioned like
Amazon, they'll ship their entire CD music catalog to you in Boksburg too. :)

Amazon is not allowed to ship games to SA, for example, but thus far
no contractual obligations have stopped them shipping movies (with
statments like "For sale and use in North America only." printed
on the jewel box and music CDs). Amazon even warns users
that some DVDs may not work in their non-US players because they
are mostly Region 1. They warn people about DVDs they sell, the said
DVDs bear "For Sale in the USA only" warnings. Yet Amazon won't allow
the download of music they sell as CD outside of USA. And ITMS won't
let you buy movies and music, Amazon, CDNOW, CDUniverse, DVDPacific
and other sellers retail to us in SA.

So why can't ITMS just allow downloads from anywhere in the world?

Just to further Add to the topic..

iTunes is allowing us to "upgrade" all current itunes to the DRM free version... for a fee of course. :)
