I've come to the conclusion that ...

Most linux/unix users are pretty damn anal. It seems that they think anybody that doesn't do something in a certain way or use a certain distro is an idiot. Over the last couple of months I've started feeling inferior because I use Ubuntu, but I've come to a point where I don't want to become one of those guys that look down on other people because they use a "user-friendly" linux distro.

So what if I use Ubuntu and I don't compile my own kernels? Damn, I even use the Software Center every now and then, and guess what? It works!

I'm starting to understand why certain people act this way, and it comes down to the fact that they feel threatened because their 1337 alliance of linux guru's are getting infiltrated by people that use Windows (OMG!).

I don't mean to offend anybody by my rant, but just think about this next time you want to go off at somebody for doing something stupid. They will learn, albeit the hard way.

All my production servers run on 64bit Ubuntu. I haven't come across anything another distro can do that I could not do on a properly configured Ubuntu server. Most tasks are even easier to accomplish (I come from a Solaris background, so that is probably understandable :p )

Wouldn't trade Ubuntu for any other distro at the moment, and believe me I've tried a *LOT* of them before I made my decision. Not saying what works for me should work for anybody else - but I absolutely LOVE this operating system.

Don't let it get to you. There are superiority-god-complex ar$eh0les (sorry - filter zapped me) in every area of life. I get the same sneers from Windows 7 or Windows Vista users when I pull out my old Compaq that still has *gasp* XP on. WTF cares? Use what works for you.

+1

I have played with debian for a while and still learning. Installed ubuntu - user firendly quite easier, but i would still prefer to learn the ins & outs of the OS.

But like koffiejunkie said... Use what works for you.

Yep, Wessie, they think just because they know it all (normally they became Linux experts over many years) everyone is a irritating NOOB. I feel your pain and agree with you fully!

There's a reason why Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distro in the world....it's the best looking, most cutting-edge & easiest distro to use! Fedora 12 comes close, but Ubuntu is still top of the pops. Oh, and it can run on a PS3 as well, just not my PS3. Much better on my Asus notebook. :)

If people complain that Ubuntu is "too easy" & Linux should be more difficult....then I should delete Windows Server 2008 R2 from all our servers and put Windows NT back? I dont think so.

But the MOST important reason why I will always use Ubuntu? It's proudly South African. ;)

Kubutu for me ATM. Ergh! I do not look forward to this weekend. I need to install a Linux VM on XP (32bit). Still contemplating if I should first go 64bit with XP and then install a Linux VM for software development.

Maybe even Win7 but that expires in 6 days! damn. What to do? Where are the cracks when you need them :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:

LOL....we just do it the other way round. Fedora 12 + Sun Virtual Box and then Windows XP.

Actually hillarious to see Internet Explorer running on Linux. :p

How is Ubuntu cutting edge? I stopped using it after 6.10 because of the bugs. it's trying to be the alpha & omega to everyone and in the process losing the plot.

How is it South African? It might have been started by Mark Shuttleworth but all the devs are from outside of SA...

Just load CentOS 5.4 desktop and you'll understand what I mean. ;)

You've answered your own question.

Bollocks, so you are saying that simply because of MS it's a SA distro? You remind me of that yank that said he's only gonna use USA distros and ended up with Debian, lol.

Funny, I feel the same way towards people doing stupid things on Windows...and they use the same Windows as me!

Really though, I don't have anything against any one that use Ubuntu, it is just that if they ask me for help they shouldn't expect me to tell them the Ubuntu way of fixing it, purely because I do not know the Ubuntu way. So in my opinion, that is what might be happening to you, except the person probably doesn't want to admit, that he or she doesn't know how to help you in Ubuntu...

I use UBUNTU at home, at work and my wifes business for the last 3yrs and no turning back.

As per other thread I've tried ARCH Linux on my Netbook and I'm loving it ... blah ... blah .. blah ... but will hounestly say that I will continue to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on other peopels netbooks. Why? Because it works and I do not have to spend hours setting them up and giving phone support.

UBUNTU FTW!!!!

i think the major reason why ubuntu users are looked down upon is because it seems the culture of trying to solve your issues yourself are not promoted. most other distros require you show that you have done some work before asking for help. reason being that people who help you are not support staff, just people who use linux and want to help. but feel that if a question has been answered many times, there is no need to add to the pile. also my take is that the way linux was built is that you are encouraged to know how the pieces fit together. because then you are able to heklp yourself when things go wrong. before i ask any question i usually spend at least 30 minutes searching for similar errors and what solutions worked.

that being said, there is nothing wrong with having a place where things are done differently. after all linux is about choice. but then if you change distros, be aware of what the people who use that distro expect. and i think this one of the things that causes the most grief. people who go to other distros and then say "but ubuntu does it this way...". that is why there are different distros. so that each can do their own thing.

so don't feel inferior. but if you venture outside of the comfort zone of whatever distro you use, be sure to embrace the culture of the new distro you are trying. otherwise you will knock heads with people.

milomak, I think you're spot on. When I started with linux we didn't have internet - I *had* to figure things out myself. If I was going to help a complete stranger with a problem, I expect that they at least do their due dilligence first. Very often the questions I see could have been resolved by typing that exact question into google and clicking on the first result.

The other side to thie issue is, like many of you, my job is to provide support. For nine hours of the day I have no choice but to answer every stupid question people can come up with. When I'm on-line in the evenings, I don't want to spend my free time spoon feeding people who are to lazy to use google. Ubuntu users especially have little excuse, since the Ubuntu forums have loads of helpful folks and they make habit of creating howtos for common issues. I search those forums from time to time for resolutions to desktopy problems, and I don't even use Ubuntu.

Thanx for the advice. Worked for me. Soled my problem in 2 min. From now on I will first search my arse off before asking a stupid question. People who use Linux is alot more willing to help than windows users.

it's something i can't understand. especially on a forum like this which is not a dedicated linux support forum. you can wait a day before getting an answer while google will provide you with options on the spot.

as an aside, i find people don't actually know that google can often provide the answers they are looking for. even on linux related forums i visit i often see questions where a google search would solve the question then and then.
