and it wont take Apple long to fix it, thats the one thing stopping me from getting one

That's the only problem I have as well, I really don't want to get into a panic each time an update arrives, kind of like pirating windows...

when are we going to see the iPhone introduced into SA legally anyway?

Edit...
Maybe we should send a couple of emails to Virgin hopefully convincing Sir Richard Branson that if he wants Virgin mobile to be successful in SA he should let virgin mobile be the official carrier of the iPhone in SA, but without the network lock of course :)

No one forces you to update. I have my itunes set to not let me know about updates or to update itself either. 1.1.2 isn't brining any new features other than European language support. So there is no need to update, and I don't have to stress or get into a panic - just enjoy my iPhone and continue life as normal. It's as easy as a check-box.

Even if someone does enable my itunes to update, you still have to select to update your phone when it asks, then it proceeds to download the update for 30 mins or so - so you'll definately have enough time to realize and cancel the download.

It's really not a stress.

I understand that you have the choice to update or not, but I'm worried about future updates that may have extra goodies or features, but not being able to update to it :(

But then you can update it, you just make sure you find a decent source and follow the steps so the phone doesn't get bricked. If you had bought the iPhone when it had 1.0.2 on it, then you could upgrade to 1.1.1 now using the hacking methods displayed all over the net.

If you bought a 1.1.1 phone, you would unlock it using the same hacking methods as above.

If you buy a 1.1.2 phone next week - you won't be able to unlock it, until they have a hacking method available - but when they have a hacking method available - I will be able to upgrade my 1.1.1 phone to 1.1.2 and unlock it.

The only difference, is that I'm enjoying my iPhone right now. When the updated version comes, we are both unlocking with the same methods created to unlock.

That's what I'm saying...
If a pay 5 Grand for a phone I don't wanna have to worry about bricking it.

If it were not for those corrupt M*F*s at AT&T....
A contract is not enough, they lock the phone as well, shows how little confidence they have in their network.

Edit...
I think I'll wait for launch of the French iPhone maybe, see if it's possible to get it imported, it should be unlocked.

I think more of my worry isn't about bricking it - because that can be fixed - it's that i spent 5k on a device with new technology in it and no warranty! If my phone breaks for some reason, not only is there no warranty but there isnt even anybody to fix it! Lucky for me I dont really overthink these things!

The iPhone is really awesome tho and worth it IMO! I am using it right now to make this post - its the first phone I've ever willinly used to properly surf the web (and not just funny mobile sites)

I agree the warranty can be a problem,
but I'm happy for you, having the iPhone is awesome, especially when it's so rare over here :)

you gotta Love exclusivity

I love the phone from the point of it's a great device. I can quickly check up on forums/banking etc on the move easily. When waiting between meetings I can watch that 20minute episode of whatever or listen to some tunes...but the exclusivity I don't like >>>

I was at a braai on Saturday, and my phone rang...so I gotta answer. Pulled out the iPhone and suddenly everyone wants to see, touch, play feel. My poor phone was being passed around, everyone getting their grubby hands all over it. Now I don't mind sharing, but 20 poeple looking at my emails, photo's, sms's - some I just met - touching, playing. UURrrggg.

Thats what you get for having a flashy phone, you'll bear this "burden" until you brick it:p:p:D

Thats whats great (and so horrible) about Windows Mobile, most people have no idea what to do with it, even after I show em how easy Touchflo is to use, they never end up anywhere too "private".

Yeah, I know what you mean, but what I meant by exclusivity Is that you don't have hype h**s walking around with the iPhone...

It's so hard to get an iPhone here you don't have people buying things for hype value rather than out of necessity, like for me it is a necessity :)

Hi broken1,

I've got a sexy iPhone working flawlessly here in Durban with Vodacom.

Firmware 1.1.1, iTunes 7.5.

I've even got a fix for your number formatting / contact auto-detection problem. Do this:

Download this, extract AppSupport to /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/ and overwrite the original. Reboot your iPhone and enjoy!

Also, there's an easy way to easily delete single SMSs. Download SMSD from Installer.app (which you should have on an unlocked iPhone) and there you go!

----

iPhone probably is the best phone I've ever used. Only two flaws is ****ty camera (quality's good enough, but no Video just kills it) and the lack of mxit support (altho there's a workaround for that, it sucked so much I actually stopped using mxit)

Wow...thanks for that :D

Really helps - the number issue isn't really a problem for me anymore. Changed my whole phonebook to international codes...so I'll just keep it that way! Love the phone tho, it's excellent!

Super mate...

I also went through the whole process of getting the baseband fixed up and then upgrading, activating, jailbreak and AnySim 1.1. Took a bit of time but with INdependance is a breeze.

I just hope they can sort it out again for Version 1.1.2

Hey there

I bought my 1.0.2 iphone already unlocked. Not sure what software was used. Is there anyway to tell. At one point I read an article saying that using virginiser if the phone was unlocked with Simfree would cause a problem. I am really wanting to upgrade to 1.1.1

It's too late to upgrade to 1.1.1. Itunes is now downloading 1.1.2 firmware, and as far as I know - there is no RELIABLE AND TESTED method to upgrade to 1.1.2 and unlock/activate.

Yeah but I have downloaded 1.1.1 to my pc. As far as I know
I Start iTunes, connect iphone to computer
Hold down power and home until the screen goes black (ignore the slide to power off screen), then let go of power
After about 10 more seconds of holding down just home, iTunes will detect that your iphone is in maintenance mode. Let go of the home button. You should see the Restore option.
Hold down shift (on windows) or option (on mac) and click restore on iTunes. Select your firwmare file that you downloaded. Itunes will then upgrade/restore your iphone to that firmware

As for the previous question - I'm pretty sure they did not use simfree to unlock this phone as youtube is not working and I don't think Simfree did that
