January Capping for TelkomISP

I was so eager to get ADSL at the time,l I sold my soul tp the devil anyway. But the devil really isn't THAT bad...

Edit: In case someone mis reads that as a "I(heart)telkom" thing, i am sorry. I meant to say that their capping system isn't really affecting me and I dont really want to be hard capped.

IS doesn't leave you wondering every 5 minutes whether you will have internet tomorrow or not. They simply DO NOT hard cap.

Their lawyers really instructed them to do that? Monitored on a minute basis?

Anyway, Telkom now absorbs the loss of 26GB of data (actually, we all know they move the money around between different branches, but anyways).

Now, the other ISPS would have lost 26*R60 or so - which is totally not achievable with the profit margins they have.

As I understand it there is no "loss" to absorb for Telkom, because they are buying their overseas interconnects by line speed, not by traffic volume.

But your point about the other ISPs is exactly how Telkom seems to be screwing them out of the market.

Every single South African that owns a telephone supports the beast.

Every single South African that uses ADSL, if the cap policy remains in place, will eventually support the beast. Why cut our noses to spite our faces? If drastic measures are not taken towards that stupid low cap policy I am sure that most of the so called abusers will go back to the beast.

Just take a minute and think: Why pay between R329 and R600 for 10GIGs if you can pay R199 and get anything from 50GIGs to 200GIGs?

Please note that I do not support TelkomInternet but, I cannot guarantee anymore that I will not support them in the future.

Supporting the beast does not mean that you agree with what they are doing.

Enough is enough, I am sick and tired of monitoring usage, sick and tired of being very careful not to download too much today because I might need it tomorrow ... bull **** ... I want to log on download what I want, do what I want online, be it browsing, using Skype, playing games, whatever ...

Not prepared to suffer at my own expense anymore.

This being correct, then Telkom's billing must be based on speed, not volume.

No such thing as MUST for Telkom ... remember, Telkom has the big helping hand .. The South African Government.

.geek, if that is how you read it, who am I to argue?

No one but Telkom will know how this shared pool thing works.
I find it quite amusing that people are trying to figure it out so that they know how much they are entitled to use.
The thing is though, if there really is some sort of formula that Telkom is using then there cant be a specific amount because it would depend on how much everyone in the pool is using. And personally I think we should be encouraging everyone to use at least 3 gigs in which case based on this shared pool system no one would be able to go over their cap.
The fact is Telkom is implementing this "system" to hurt the smaller ISPs and its highly likely that they are just doling out gigs and that this system is just a work of fiction.
I agree with PostmanPot. If youre going to use more just go for it, keep it relatively slow and be prepared to fork out for second account if you dont want to be capped for the rest of the month.

Incedently ive averaged about 30 gigs a month since november 1st without being capped.

If there really was such system in place, the pool thingy, then the bigger ISPs would also introduce the same, by now they know who the abusers are and who the non-abusers are so they would introduce the same system.

As far as I am concerned there is no such system, I don't think it would work anyway.

It does work - for Telkom. For two reasons
1) People are willing to support the beast if it suits them
2) Telkom and SAIX are one and the same, so there is no financial risk for Telkom to implement it.

It's an online forum, people don't need to state or prove who they are.

the Telkom employees probly all sit there laughing at us trying to figure it out.

Hi

Anyone using Telkom ISP gone over 3gb yet without being hardcapped?

Thanks
I'm also interested to know if January will be the same as December. It's incredible that Telkom will be as underhanded as they can be to screw the other ISP's.

That is correct. But just because it's an online forum doesn't mean you have to be rude and sarcastic. (And correct people's spelling - that's just plain petty and uncalled for).

I think its likely that Telkom s employees are sitting there sh1tting themselves because of how close we've come to figuring it out.
When I worked for the beast years back(on a contract basis) there was a a general feeling of :" When the competition comes I'm getting the fcck out of here."
I can only imagine that with the constant down sizing and growing animosity towards Telkom that these sentiments within Telkom have grown.

Fair enough.
