January Capping for TelkomISP

Hi

Anyone using Telkom ISP gone over 3gb yet without being hardcapped?

they are still uncapped AFAIK. after your cap, you start using bandwidth from an 'unused bandwidth pool' - or so they say. just don't go and download full throttle - space it out a bit ;)
 
why, so u can go full throttle...heheh ;)
I'm really in the dark as to what a person can do to guage how much he can download over the 3gb without being capped.
Seeing as telkom is now working with averages, is there some place where we can see the total ADSL traffic used and see how much of that "bandwidth pool" is still available....

Wishful thinking I suppose....:o
 
i've seen people getting caped at above 50GB, around 20GB.. some have even done around 90GB! then, some have been capped at around 6GB or so. the point is, it seems like it's totally random.

i rate, bite the bullet and pump the d/ls. if you get capped, just buy a GB of bandwidth from another per-gig ISP.

isn't the capping supposed to occur at the same date/time for all people that have exceeded their 3GB, or am I missing something? I mean the pool will get drained and then everyone who is past the limit gets capped, right, wrong?

so in theory the capping should occur sooner or later in the month depending on the overal usage and you being past the 3GB
 
I'm getting a feeling that they are capping people that are intensely downloading, if for instance you download 5Gb a day they cap you earlier.

So try to download only 1-2Gb a day or so and see what happens.
 
November 1 saw the introduction of a formal capping policy from our access provider SAIX (South Africa Internet eXchange). The new service allows for greater flexibility for the various ISP's (Internet Service Providers) and permits both hard capped or usage based options. TelkomInternet has elected the usage based option which is the most flexible model allowing TelkomInternet to provide an improved service to our subscribers.

So what does this mean to you, our valued subscriber? To the majority of our subscribers it will have very little impact. The introduction of an average usage based option means that a hard usage cap will not be enforced on the basic services until such time as the average usage per subscriber per product set reaches the 2, 3 or 4 GB allocated limits. At this point all services exceeding the product capping limits will be capped.

Regrettably, high end usage will no longer be possible in this new model and hard caps have been imposed to maintain a suitable service for all concerned. High-end users will be capped once this pre defined threshold is reached, irrespective of average usage. A hard cap will terminate the service until the beginning of the new month.

As one of our subscribers, you will find that the first improvement has been the removal of the soft cap. Access to our local gaming and entertainment servers has been upgraded as well.

Next year will see the introduction of a range of services for those subscribers that would prefer a stand alone usage based service. These services will start from as little as 1 GB for the entry level home user to unlimited pay-as-you-go options for the business market.

So according to the above, if they have 10 users on the 3GB accounts, no one will be capped until the total usage for those 10 users reached 30GB, and then only the users that used more than 3GB will be capped. Now imagine the capped users don't buy extra accounts, and the still uncapped one got a total of 10GB available and they use 5 of them. So the total usage for those 10 users become 35GB but telkom got paid for only 30GB ?!?! Am I missing something???
 
I would sell my left small finger just for a orginised answer from Telkom Which explains everything to the last atom of their service.

Yes, it does seem to be a bit unpredictable with the weay they do the capping.

Like swordfish said, one would expect users who have gone over 3Gb to be capped at the same time...but this doesnt seem to be the case.

Trying to find a method to the madness.....:confused:
 
They have no capping method. It is clear what they are doing, and it is unfortunate....however, they will get away with abusing their power, because they are Telkom.

They are capping at random, hiding this fact behind a "capping policy explanation" that makes little sense.

If I am wrong, I would appreciate a Telkom representitave to correct me.
 
The thing is, I am not going to convert ot another ISP, because I discovered all that DSL can do for me when they introduces this system. So, that is probably what they are trying to do,and I feel so evil for wanting all the gigs.
 
I know how it works.

There is this BIG room, with about 110 000 buttons in it all spread out over a few kilometers.
Each button represents a telkom subscriber...
Now when a user reaches his limit the button turns red and needs to be pushed for the hard capping to come into effect.

Now the problem Telkom has is that the employee that must push these buttons is firstly almost completely colour blind and secondly she/he is FAT and I'm talking 200KG here.

So when a button goes red he/she struggles to find that button due the the colour blindness. If thats not to much allready he/she takes an age to move about the room because of the weight problem.

So thats why people are not getting capped at the same time.:D
 
No-one blames you for using them.

I just firmly believe what's good for the goose is good for the gander, but when the farm is owner by Telkom, I suppose fairness isn't an option.

lol ... dream on MrBEEP (Telkom rep to correct you) .. they are instructed by their lawyers not to make any comments on this forum ... they monitor it on a minute basis but not allowed to comment.

Regarding their cap policy it really does not work, who goes into the individual pools? what if there are 10 individuals in that pool and 9 download in excess of what the pool allows and 1 had only download 1GIG? according to what I read here on this forum everyone on that pool gets caped? I doubt very much that those so called "pools" really exist ... Telkom is just looking for a legal technicality to dodge the law.

Like I said before, there are no good lawyers in South Africa to take on the beast.

How can we convince Telkom to start a forum similar to this one on their site?

Would be interesting to see what all South Africans have to say, not just ADSL users.
 
Ok, assume Telkom has 10 3GB users.

One user goes balistic and downloads 29 GB in one go, while the rest do not use the service at all.
The pool now effectively has 29GB used, and 1GB unused.
Now, the other 9 users use 1GB, and user 1 is capped.
The remaining 9 users then use up to their 3GB and are capped.

This means, that 29 + (3*9) = 56 GB was used (excues the math if wrong ;) ).

Anyway, Telkom now absorbs the loss of 26GB of data (actually, we all know they move the money around between different branches, but anyways).

Now, the other ISPS would have lost 26*R60 or so - which is totally not achievable with the profit margins they have.

Thanks, I'll stick with Internet Solutions, rather than sell my soul to the devil.
