I am a java developer and are going to start dabbling in android dev soon.
I am wondering, is it advisable to first learn Kotlin and rather use that, or just proceed with java for android app development.
Any app developers out there who can offer some advice?

I've developed for Android before (bidorbuy app) - but been doing iOS dev for the last decade - but I can say this:

Since you already know Java; start with that. Getting to know Android Studio and the Android SDK takes a lot of time and is made easier if you don't have to worry about learning the language on top of it.

Having said that; Kotlin is the future of Android development. So, you'll need to know it if you want to do more than just dabble.

Kotlin has been an official language for Android since 2018 and Android dev stuff has been Kotlin first for a long time.
Go with Kotlin. If you ever need to know some Java, it's really easy to understand once you know Kotlin.

He knows Java already. Which is why my suggestion was to just start with java, and learn the Android Dev environment first. Then go to Kotlin if he is serious about Android dev.
