since last week i've been having a fair amount of pain in the jaw area. if i chew it's rather sore, but gets better, but starting off it hurts quite a bit. what i've also noticed is that it's not to do with toothache (thank goodness) and that my jaw feels like it's moved a bit - it's almost like i have to pull it back to bite down on my molars. if i bite down on my front teeth it feels perfectly fine.

the pain is between the jaw muscles and my ear and i think it's giving me a bit of a headache (since last night) and a faintly painful tickle in my ear. and mostly on the right.

any ideas on what it could be? also, which quack should i go see? keep in mind that dentists scare the crap out of me. :(

I also had the same pain a few months ago. Couldn't even open my mouth properly for about a week. It wasn't tooth related either. It went away eventually.

Best to see a GP asap. You don't wanna take any chances.

I had the same issue , jaw and ear pain. Turned out to be that i was grinding my teeth while asleep. Had to get a bite plate made to put on every night before i sleep. the ear pain is caused by the little bones in your ear touching while you grind your teeth.

I've got the same, when I stress I clench my jaw in my sleep, causing the muscles to into spasm. The can lead to reference pains in your ears and head. Try opening your mouth as big as you can and see if the muscles are sore.

If it is that, there's not much they can do except give you a mouth guard type thing to protect your teeth against the grinding. Try chewing some gum to relax the muscles.

Am currently having that issue, just on my left side. I find jamming my finger into the muscle for about a minute helps, but it is definitely getting better with time

opening wide is a little (but almost not) uncomfortable. perhaps i'll make a trip to the doc this week. i hope he doesn't inject me in the butt. that's like the newest craze with doctors these days.

if i drop my jaw and push it back with my hand for +-20 seconds it eases up a bit, but later on it's back to being sore and uncomfortable.

Hi,

You will need to see a Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon. You have a cartilage disc between your skull and jawbone and sometimes this disc moves causing some pressure and this causes the headaches etc. These doctors use exercises, tablets, injections or even sometimes surgery to alleviate the pressure / pain.

Sometimes this corrects itself and sometimes not its to go see someone like Dr Pearl and he will asses the damage. You looking at the below charges:

R800 consultation
R350 scan

If he doesn't like what he sees then you go to a radiologist and have a scan done which takes R1958 from your Discovery MSA.

Then from there on you get follow up visits, jaw physio and all sorts.

Get your wife / girlfriend a punching bag, its much cheaper. :p

Do you still have your wisdom tooth??? Because if you do that may be why . . .

Too many variables ... you need a physical examination

thanks for the tip. i'll let my GP have a look at it first (specialists need a referral first as far as i know) and then ask him about a "Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon". i see there are a few around the durban area, so i'll go with a list and find out which one he recommends.

nope, they were taken out in 2002.

go see the maxillo-facial surgeon. i had this pain a few months ago and the doctor thought it was a neuralgia. turned out to be something completely different and i was completely and utterly shocked at what it was. i'm not ready to discuss it at the moment. but listen to DX.

ok, i'll give one of these doctors a call and find out if i needed a referral. it's been sore so far the whole day.

your experience doesn't exactly calm my nerves....

A sore jaw accompanied by a loss of memory about the night before may be an indication of having talked a klomp k@k to the wrong oke at the pub last night.
