How good or bad is the jeep compass - Top Gear give it a 5/20...is it that bad have read some reviews where it polled quite high...its probably not as good as the honda cr-v (top gear rated 11/20) but surely it can't be that bad...anyone out there to defend its honour::erm:

The only 'Jeep' not trail-rated, ie for on-road use only by GM's own admission. 2nd-worst selling Jeep product ever, beaten out only by the truly atrocious Jeep Commander. If memory serves the Compass is basically a Dodge Calibre in drag...?

There aren't barge poles long enough.

Jeep suck in general(American cars) so I would stay away.

Had a Grand Cherokee before and there were more problems than kilometers covered

I'd also stay clear of Jeeps in general... a friend of mine has had terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE) reliability from her 2002 Jeep Cherokee, and they are expensive to fix.

wranglers are tough as hell. people break them while taking them to their extremes... but honestly jeep is a good brand, it's just that now and then luck is not on your side...

and buying an off road vehicle and not taking it off road breaks the vehicle, same as pavements... haahaha....

I was given the Compass as a loan car when my Cherokee got serviced recently and drove it for a weekend. It had about 12000kms on the clock.

They come with maintenance plans I think so you shouldn't have an issue with service etc.

My impressions are:
- It's a CAR and not a SUV/4x4. Drives like a car. Low on the ground like a normal car.
- Interior was great. Very plastic but high quality plastic if you know what I mean. Like Tupperware vs no-name brand.
- I had the 2.4L Auto and it went great. I'm used to the 3.7L v6 and didn't notice any difference in response or power. I do drive very calmly as a rule though.
- It took quite a while for me to get used to the position of the mirrors and that irritated me but I think it was more a case of getting used to it as opposed to them not working.

I'd certainly consider one if I wasn't so stuck on sitting high off the road. It's too low for me but that's my only issue with it. Everything else was great.

I had a few of the so called worst cars available and never had issues with any of them. I've had 2 Alfa's, a Land Rover, 2 Fords and a Jeep. Maybe I'm just lucky but I believe it's how you treat things that counts.

The Jeeps gearbox did pack up at 70,000k's. It gave all the warnings etc (dashboard lights) but the agents in George told me 'it's nothing serious' and that it would be fine to drive to CPT. It wasn't but I can't blame the car for that. I kinda blame myself for trusting the dude at the dealership because he didn't seem very sure of himself but I didn't want to have to leave my car in George for a week while they got the part they needed.

I have a good friend who's BMW has been in the garage for more days than it's been out. I have a colleague who has endless hassles with his VW. Both drive like mad all time. Just my view.

Jeeps, on a whole, aren't absolutely terrible - especially if you intend to do some off-roading. After all, they've got to cross the Rubicon Trail in order to form part of the Jeep product line - except for the dear old Compass, of course.
