JHB to Cape Town

I'm playing with Google Maps and route from JHB to Cape Town.

I tick "Avoid Tolls" and... it's a 22 km difference (about 30 min extra drive) to avoid all tolls on the N1 between JHB and Cape Town?

It's R138.50 just for the normal tolls and R21.93, I get about 10 km / litre petrol

So for R24 extra, I avoid paying a total of R160.43?

Is this true? Or am I just not calculating these things correctly?

Pretty sure your toll fees will be way more than R138

Toll fees sounds about right, around R100 JHB to BFN, then around R30 BFN to CPT (huguenot tunnel) on the N1.

It is probably true, but drive it and see what the alternative routes look like and you'll realise why you pay tolls. There are some good ones, there are some very bad ones.

Not worth it if you planning on driving the Jhb part at night, might just end up being hijacked.

Jip, the Free State bit's are rather bad, lots of pot holes and it's single lane with no shoulders. Only do the detour in the day and if you are not in a hurry.

Otherwise stick to the N1 and enjoy.
