JIA name officially changed - apparently

Should government steer clear of all political names when renaming national assets?

I'm just wondering how a name change will make us a beacon or the top nation in africa?
It wont.
And like Highflyer said, what will it do to benifit the people in our country?
Nothing.

Difference is that there's very little else to prevent because it's bordering on illogical. How does one prevent a homeless person from becoming further homeless? See what I mean?

That's not how it works. You can spend money curing the probelms, but there will be a never ending supply of victims to cure. Hence prevention is better.

I'm not saying don't build houses, of course communities need facilities and infrustructure, I'm just saying there is a case for sustainable development and long term planning.

Which can be achieved by renaming everything for no reason??

Your argument is for a cure, rather that prevention. Most school children know the saying "prevention is better than cure" or the "teach a man to fish" philosophy.

It gives us credibility within the african union, again, like renaming Pretoria Tswane. The african union is very important in raising the standard african countries live up to. Now look ahead and see us doing more trade with our neighbours on the continent in emerging markets at cheaper costs and the results on our economy.
How does changing a name prevent anything?

and how will it give us 'credibility within the african union'?

It just doesn't make sense.

Do you think your question even warrants a response from the guy?

Thats rich coming from you, a person who manges to add nothing in every thread you post in other than your own racist agenda.

If someone makes a claim they should back it up.

It's not just any airport, it is our top international airport.

We want to become a beacon on the african continent and sit at the head of the african union. So I can see why SA would want to change the name of the top international airport the same way we changed the name of our capital city. Is it African-ness? Of course it is. Is it a good thing? Of course it is.

Absurd reasoning. You become the “beacon” of the continent by being the best, not by having a certain name.

Well how credible is zimbabwe and mugabe? I'm sure they have lots of places with "african" names...

The name of Africa is a Latin construct and as such the name African Union is colonialist and thus must be innihalated...

Like all the answers you've given so far? Oh wait thats another question... although a valid one. I guess we're dodging the point then.

It doesn't make sense because the name of something doesn't change what it is. Renaming JIA will not make it better. Renaming Pretoria will not change what it is. All it is is an exercise in how to waste the tax payers money.

Its doesn't make sense, because we are supposed to be reconciling and JIA is a nice neutral name, not of a person that (while he was great, like the person the person JIA replaced) is politically motivated.

Change it to Ekurhuleni International Airport or rename Joburg to Egoli, and call it Egoli International Airport, then I wouldn't have a problem and it would make sense.

Because it is a sorry state of affairs if something like that is required to ensure credibility.

I strongly doubt that on a continent being ravished by AIDS, TB, and Malaria the rest of Africa gives two shaggs what SA's airport is called.

It would still serve no real purpose though.

I'm not going to draw everyone a diagram or keep repeating my point of view over and over but renaming our top international airport to reinforce our the South African brand and our position in the African Union, doesn't sound like the worst idea in the world.

And yes, I concede changing the name won't change what it is. I was hoping for it to be called "free-buckets-of-cash" but in the end it will still be an airport.
