JIMS - worth going to?

Noob question here: do the manufacturers let you sit inside the cars or can they only be viewed from outside?

I can't recall what the deal was when I was at Auto Africa at the Dome many years ago.

You can sit in some of the cars, at the previous show I sat in the Mercs and BMWs. There is a lot more to do than just look at cars - there was a 4x4 track where the top manufactures had vehicles with drivers, I went in the Toyota FJ Cruiser (it was a brand new model at the time).

Whether you come for the show depends on how much of a car fanatic you are. I went twice in 2011 as I felt it was the best thing under the sun!!! I might go twice again this year also

You can sit in all the cars except concept cars and cars behind barriers..

I am definitely going twice again. Going on Friday next week and then on Saturday again. They have some shows and things on weekends aw well.

Agreed with people saying that it's nice if you stay within driving distance, but not worth flying up for. I'd only fly for a motor show if there was an option to test drive cars, even if you had to pay

I reckon I should be given VIP treatment for effort then! :D

Maybe you should stick with the Volvo, Dacia and VAG exhibits them, they are more [-]boring[/-] in-line with your [-]conservative[/-] apparent taste in cars.

Just because you like bland, plastic cars, doesn't mean you can associate your taste with mine.

Chevrolet, in MY opinion, are bland! Opel still have some excitement in the brand.

Putting an RS badge and giving a Sonic 100KW does not change it to anything but a Sonic.

:D that has to be the most excellent reply I have seen in a while. Nice one Mike.

I was hoping someone would reply "no" to my question of see where I am going with this, cause I would then conclude that I don't know either.

Anyway, about the RS, if you look at other Koreans offerings in its league then its pretty sweet. Then again not everyone is fond of the Koreans.

The uptake from industry has been very poor this year in terms of sponsorship and attendance, especially in the trucking industry that's felt a massive brunt over the last two years. Many of the big names are not sponsoring or taking stands...

True, damn those pesky trucks, they should stop being so DAF, MAN up or get the Dongfeng out of there.

Koreans make great cars, but I am anti Chevrolet - I just can't get past their rental car image.....

But the SA product planners for the Korean manufacturers are clueless. HOW Hyundai SA could launch the lukewarm 100ish kw Volester is beyond me - it has ruined what could've been a massive hit! If they had led with the turbo then the hype would've carried through to the n/a model.

Quite true, however there is one Chevy that is not Korean and definitely nor a rental. It comes from a land down under.

So I didn't see a Volvo, Alfa, Suburu, Daihitsu or Fiat stand ...

As usual, Porsche, Ferrari, Aston, Maseratti, Lambo aren't included - however they're normally sitting in an Investment Cars stand - which I never saw. Perhaps I was in a rush, but if anyone else goes you can tell me what else what lacking?

I've been since it was Auto Africa in the 90s but I found this wasn't as good as the previous

I have to agree. Wasn't as good as shows before. But the NSX made up for that :)
