Johannesburg - The Joburg Metro Police Department has issued a total of 139 notices, 41 citations and 52 fines to residents found not adhering to water restrictions.

Many of these offences were picked up after tip-offs received from community members.

Joburg residents are only reaching a 3.5% in water savings since the introduction of level-2 restrictions imposed in September - far from the 15% requested by the Department of Water Affairs.

Joburg Water has since then been receiving 15% less water from its bulk supplier, Rand Water.

And yet, a clean-water burst pipe in my street has been running for 5-6 years now...
(we gave up getting Randburg municipality to come fix it after year 4)

Give me the address of the leak, I'll get it sorted :p

And why don't we reach the targets?

Not really fair to pick on the residents

Randburg Bram Fischer had a leaking pipe for 8 months, they are still fixing the road.

My meter has been leaking for months now so much so it's starting to **** up my driveway

I've lost count how many times I've requested they come make a repair

JMPD.. doing everything but stopping the idiot drivers & taxis driving in the wrong lanes, thru barriers, islands etc

Try again. Email them on [email protected].. Get the ref number, then hak them on twitter after a couple of days

How sad is your life that you have nothing better to do, than to tattle tale on a neighbour using that which he pays for.

Well when Joburg starts cutting water for hours at a time it will affect you as well as them.

To be fair their mandate isn't only to police traffic.

They have to enforce municipal bylaws as well...

That will happen regardless. The problem isn't people watering their gardens or washing their cars with a hosepipe. Didn't you post pictures of the REAL problem earlier in the thread?

How sad is your life if one cannot comprehend a drought...

(and no, no one is excusing the mess left by the previous ANC administration that rather spends however many million to host a beauty pageant, that should have rather spent in on refurbishing the water infrastructure)

We need citizen activists combined with law enforcement that works.
Contempt for the law is far too widespread in SA and has led us down the road to where we are now, where the roads are a free-for-all, people litter everywhere, dogs run free in public spaces, etc.

People need to know they will be held to account if they break the social contract they enter as citizens of a country.
