Job ponderings

So this is my issue:

I am currently working at a private company makes a bad salary. Look I'm sure its not that bad but to me it's bad. When I see my workload and responsibility compared to that of friends in the industry it makes me sad. I earn less with a much higher work load and responsibility

That being said I like what I do, and I like that I'm not a the smallest b**ch in the office. If I moved jobs I would most likely end up as an intern, where as at the moment I'm a lot more than that. I get to attend meetings where I'm the youngest by 20years, and conferences with big fish

So the question is: Do I chase the money now, and the potential for growth next year OR do I stay where I am and be content earning less but having my ego stroked?

Thoughts, comments, anecdotes and "Be grateful you have a job" comments please ^^

Maybe speak to your boss first and see what he has to say.

Just tell them you want a Market related wage or your job graded
more responsibilities means more money. Outline your living costs
sometimes people tend to take a loan of others not realising how
they may live. If you are a weak minded person they will take advantage
need to be assertive, with the meetings speak up don't necessary agree with
everything.

PS Any promises get it in writing

Loyalty is only the next pay cheque remember that!! as the Company will not hesitate
when downsizing (out you go thanks for your service) Bye now

true that, these days especially, not like the previous generation where people would work for 20+ years for the same company, those days are long gone......
Indeed they are. I was told a normal employment cycle is 1.5 - 4 years with a company.
It all comes because of the way the world is now, the cheap throwaway society, and bosses that think they are all powerful and can do whatever they like, but its more than that, its the way of the world, they want slaves and yes men and women.

The current education system is geared to producing slaves and yes people for consumption by the corporates

until what end? when will this implode on itself, what will happen to all the 20-30 somethings in the job market that get to retirement age, if they will even get there in the first place,

what will the world be like when many of us get to our 40's and 50's still doing jobs for little money and changing every 1-3 years, if not shorter?

its like living the life of a cockroach, waiting to be squished and running away, to scavenge somewhere else?

I miss the good old days.........:whistling:

When I have all the answers I will let you know.
Right now, one of the solutions seems to be working for yourself.

In South Africa, employers i.e. bosses, have this attitude that they can treat people whichever way they want, because work is scarce and people are very unlikely to tell him to f--- off. So they get away with doing things such as:

* Bullying
* Belittling
* Picking on
* Making life difficult

They do this mostly to non-unionized employees, in sectors where there's little to no union presence. Industries such as software development, IT, electronic engineering, freight forwarding and clearing, vehicle tracking, security.

.... people are disposable, chase the money now, and set yourself up for the latter part of your life... however i do have to add that burning bridges along the way is probably not the best thing to do. Its a small world.

Best advice ever.
The disposability is best illustrated in the movie The Cat in the Hat with Mike Myers, and that douchebag real estate boss who loves to scream "FIRRRREDDDDDDDDDDD"

that's the thing I never get, I incidentally work in IT, and get treated like a piece of garbage everyday
I always wondered why there is no IT union? or one that takes care of our needs?

or am I the first to think of such a idea?

This is my first year at this company. I was told that my salary was to be reviewed after 3months. The reasoning for this would be to change in responsibility and workload. Three months came and went. Still earning the same with workload and responsibility ever increasing as they learn about my particular skill set.

I'm in a new position so have taken over work that would normally be outsourced. Lots of work that would normally be outsources -_-

true that, if its not in writing its meaningless, I was promised a change of scenery with my new job,
wanted to try something new, instead got stuck doing the same work for the less salary with no rights

so I do understand where you are coming from, and I think many others are in the same boat as me.......

my questions still remains, why has nobody done an IT union , one that looks after all IT workers needs.
is it because there still are too few of us? or is it because of some other reason?

I mean pizza delivery guys have a union, mineworkers (who can be super skilled) have one, why not IT guys?

@ OP

What do you do exactly?

I do lots. I suppose the easiest way would to explain it would be research. In specific the management and analysis of said data

I have an email. Only issue is that my boss my be a bit vindictive about it. Guess I should just grow some balls and approach it
