Joburg ICT maturity low

He he, there's always the opportunity to leapfrog. But then I PM'd an Africa-wide initiative to exploit the internet-led leapfrog opportunities in 1996, and the grand plans by African governments just didn't happen.

I got to realise two things

1. It is attitudes that need to be leapfrogged (not technologies in the hands of planners)
2. However disruptive technologies and open competition drive amazing, often unexpected transformation
 
The person that wrote this article seems to think we're riding on lions: “Johannesburg has the opportunity to pass others by, for example, choosing not to set up formal banking systems and other expensive physical infrastructures and instead use advanced mobile technologies,” the report states.

Really, so we don't have formal banking systems?

This is a good initative - i would still challenge Ericsson and others to do the same for rural and/or underserved areas. We need to find out why is the communications gap not closing and what needs to be done to fast track this anomally. It is a policy, regulatory and/or technology matter OR reluctance by operators to adher to National Priority objectives - addressing the inequalities?

Goddamn Scandinavians, they threw away their gateway to Africa (i.e. cheap handsets), and now they want to map technologically undeveloped areas. It's Africa buddy, not Times Square.
