Mayor Mashabe is busy dropping some scary facts about Joburg Infrastructure in a media briefing...
Source = various tweets

eg:
One of our challenges is blatant sabotage from some senior officials working against this administration, at the expense of residents.
Our predecessors spent a great deal of time, effort & money fooling themselves & our residents about the state of our City #JoziInfraCrisis
Hundreds of millions of Rands were spent promoting an artificial image of @CityofJoburgZA not their strongest supporters believed.
R153 million spent in two years on self-promotional advertising, R193 million spent in three years on travel. #JoziInfraCrisis
They claimed Johannesburg as a World Class City, which couldn’t have been further from the lived reality of the majority of our residents. (me: natch)
We have ONE electricity sub-station that supplies the entire Inner City of Johannesburg. The thought should leave you cold #JoziInfraCrisis
It is 75 years old, 30 years past its useful lifespan. It is old enough to have served some of your great-grandparents. #JoziInfraCrisis
No service parts are available for this sub-station any longer – they stopped making those parts 20 YEARS AGO. #JoziInfraCrisis
Much of our infrastructure was built in the dark days of Apartheid, designed to exclusively serve small white communities. #JoziInfraCrisis
To make matters worse, our City Entities have been hit by institutionalised corruption and crime. #JoziInfraCrisis
Last week, we recovered vandalised and stolen City Power equipment and infrastructure worth R80 million. #JoziInfraCrisis
Never before has there been an appreciation of how fraud & corruption has robbed the poorest in our City of the dignity from basic services.
Every day our residents suffer from these challenges, but they have never known why they are so many. #JoziInfraCrisis
They have never known how these experiences relate to government failure, or of any real plans to address them. #JoziInfraCrisis
We have an excess of 2000 cases totalling over R16 Billion under investigation & think of how our poor communities could have been serviced.
Can you imagine that we have had to accept over 45 177 leaks in our water pipes in our City? #JoziInfraCrisis
Can you imagine that 27% of our electricity infrastructure is past its life span? #JoziInfraCrisis
The overall acceptable Condition Indices for bridges in a very good should be minimum 80% - currently only 5.77% are #JoziInfraCrisis^TK
78.38% of City bridges are in a Poor or Very Poor condition #JoziInfraCrisis^TK
Total @Myjra infra backlog is 81.5 bln #JoziInfraCrisis^TK

Would be great if you organised them in a more presentable manner Sinbad

Thanks

This comes as absolutely no surprise. I am not sure how a formal economy was supposed to support millions of people via grants, and to upgrade and maintain all the infrastructure to cater for the millions not part of the formal economy. Just extending basic services such as water and power is incalculable. By adding in housing and land redistribution, the ANC set itself up for failure. Our economic growth has stagnated and per capita GDP growth is laughable. Saw this coming a long time ago.

What is even more funny is that the ANC thought that it could do all that, bloat the public sector payroll to pad employment stats and pay salaries which are comparable to the private sector (and in some cases even more).

Ayyy, even the DA has to pull a cheap party trick.

But it is a fact. Fairly certain it wasn't meant to score brownie points. It's something that was designed back in the apartheid days to serve mostly the white community living/working there. ANC's poor planning when they took over meant the infrastructure isn't upgraded to cope with growth.

Dark days? Couldn't sound more ironic if you tried..

For the rest, only a surprise if you had your head in the sand about this continent and its 'leaders'..

It's easy to believe there's internal sabotage, either by mismanagement or physical damage.

How else would the electrical sub-station at Roosevelt Park fail 43 times (so far) in 2017?

When last did you see a pothole filled that lasted longer than 4 weeks?
