Johannesburg - The principal of Westridge Secondary School would be charged with misconduct after a trip to a neighbouring country by three school governing body members, the Gauteng education department said on Monday.

Spokesperson Charles Phahlane said after an independent forensic report, the school was found to have contravened the SA Schools Act, with Gauteng department head Boy Ngobeni ordering the department to take action against the principal.

"The report said the principal should be charged and funds should be recovered from all those who went on the school trip," Phahlane said in a statement.

"If any of the members are still on the school governing body, the department should take steps to remove them."

He said the department served the principal with a charge sheet and has started legal action to recover funds from those who went on the trip.

Is it just me or is this article vague? What's the problem? What did they contravene? :confused:
 
It is a bit vague, it seems the trip was probably for personal reasons, in which case they used school funds to pay for their holiday. The members of the governing body are probably all friends.

As far as I understand it, one of the teachers- a Zimbabwean got married in his home town and the school paid for the principal and governing body members to fly there to support him on the day.
 
Typical rubbish reporting from News24. The main gist of the article, that members of the school's governing body stole funds from the school and used them for personal reasons, has to be guessed because the article doesn't even mention this once.
 
the gauteng department are quite heavy handed with school funds. They dont allow performance bonuses, Christmas parties. and no exageration- this was an example they gave-> If you want to give a teacher a sandwich from the tuck shop you need written permission from the GDE- its pathetic.
