Hi, posted this on their forum, but not much action. And by not much, I mean, none.
So maybe I could get a bit of a response here...

Hi there. I am in Fourways Gardens region.
My location:
Latitude: 26° 0'6.52"S
Longitude: 27°59'59.24"E

I have noticed there are alot of planning nodes in this region. However, I cannot seem to find a node to connect to nicely.

How can we go about expanding into this region, so that myself as well as the other users can connect?

Cheers,
Kris

Hey... Dude...
Im not sure if you didn't understand my post or what.

I was explaining that I have done this.
And there are alot of other planning nodes also in my area. But not anyone I could connect to with line of sight etc...

So where are you guys..
Im asking, isn't there something we can do.. Chip in together,
get the stuff we need to expand the network?

yeah - if you are below a hill, and you know someone who his ontop of the hill but isn't REALLY convinced to join, sponsor 1/3 of his kit, and then connect to him.

you guys can also each chip in a % of a new node somewhere

but i'm not qualified to state this as fact, so take my post with a pinch of salt heheh

Step 1
i would go one the irc and ask if there any new HS in area planned/got permission and w8 for money.
step 2
if step one is no. then ask for the general letter and find a nice high building or tower thing that can be used for HS and go ask for permission.
step3
after getting permission talk to Xarion or silencer they are admins on what equipment is required. and start a project get cash from fellow potential wuggers

PS: irc server address is irc.wug.za.net chat in channel #jawug or #wnet
PSS: talk to Xarion his like the main admin i think

Don't these people believe in E-mail? Why is it always the IRC? I never get any answers there. :(

they have been the friendliest bunch of people I have ever met IMO

It seemed like they got a kick out of helping people - Wifi geeks love anything to do with the WUG :p

Yes, no you are right. They are indeed very helpful. Sorry I didn't mean to give that impression. I'm just not a big fan of IRC and have not made much progress with that line of assistance. It's the only time I would ever use and I don't feel like installing the client again just to talk to them.

Hey ppl,

Apologies that you have been having "concerns"... I cannot speak for the rest of the gang, but I have had one heck of a month... am too busy at work to even do anything wug related to be honest....

The nice thing about irc is that it is live - and there are many people there - willing to assist where they can....

We have a new website going live shortly, which will make things a heck of a lot easier as far as seeing the possible nodes around you to which you can connect. Also, it will be much easier to contact people who you may be interested in chatting to about getting together, funding a site, and connecting to the rest of the network.

I used to monitor the forum daily, but due to my new workload, I'm getting up at 04:00, hitting the office at 05:00 and living on coffee and adrenalin until the evenings....

Try IRC again, try the forum, keep posting here (but in the wifi/wisp section pls) and we will get to you, sooner or later!

Jawug was started by two people, linking together... and that expanded slowly to three or four people... In other areas, people were linking together and eventually, all of these little networks were connected together and thats how things came about...

I was one of the first people in the West Rand, financed the equipment for our west-to-east link, and the rest is history! So I think what I am trying to say is, try link up with people in your area first (if at all possible) and the more this happens, the bigger your little area will become.... We WILL link to you sooner or later... It's just a matter of getting to you!

We have always battled to get decent coverage into Fourways / Rivonia / Sandton, but we are looking at a couple of sites currently, and we are always ready to do what is necessary to speak to people, and try and utilise decent sites...

marine1 is correct though - JHB is very different from PTA, and it is a lot more difficult to get LOS to specific sites... Especially in the West Rand... I could tear my hair out at some of the hassles I have to deal with in the West...

Some of the guys waited years (I am not exaggerating) to get connected, but they never gave up... whereas someone who may have heard about this on a forum somewhere, happened to have suitable kit (perhaps from a bad wisp experience :D) and came into IRC, and was connected within three minutes!!

I better stop my rambling now, and get some work on the go....

Keep at it, keep bugging us, keep trying, make it happen in your own little areas, link to a friend, start things off, but keep bugging us as well, so we can put you in contact with people nearby....

From my side, I promise to try and spend more time checking forum posts!

I think ryder has covered all the bases on this one.....

but please come in to IRC and have a chat about the possibilities :)

channel : #wnet

Yea, I don't use IRC either... Coz I cant at work, and don't get the motivation to set it up on my 3G card when I get home... But maybe I must attempt at some point.
