Does anyone know if a married couple can 'share' their tax responsibilities (especially if only one is the breadwinner)?

Wat bedoel jy? Pay half the tax? If there is only one breadwinner how would the other pay tax?

e.g. (1) Husband earns R40 000, wife earns R0 - TAX would be about R9 500
e.g. (2) Husband earns R20 000, wife earns R20 000 - TAX would be about R6 000

That will only work if they own their own business and income is generated like that. The "company" can then employ the wife and pay her the salary

Nope, tax man taxes per single entity. Married in community of property does not help either.

It actually used to be the opposite. Wife's income was added to husband's to determine the tax bracket.

Only passive income (interest, rental, or capital gains) is pooled with your spouse. This means that each spouse is taxed on 50% of their joint investment income, so it doesn't apply to your salary.
