The Joomla! project announced the release of Joomla! 2.5.0

This is is the 3rd in a new series of 6-month releases, and as a Long Term Support (LTS) release, it will be supported for at least 18 months.

See http://www.joomla.org/25 for more details and to download this release.

There seems to be a lot of small additions. Not sure if they are all that useful. The new search seems nice though.

There are a number of useful updates from 1.7.x and additional features like Smart Search and Multi-DB support (that will be expanded on in future releases).

Those who use 1.6.x and 1.7.x should be able to Update without a problem, and all 1.7.x Extensions should work on 2.5. Most 1.6.x Extension should also work without issue.

There would be no reason to remain on 1.6/1.7, since 2.5 includes hundreds of bug fixes plus the extra features. As Short Term Support (STS) releases, the support for 1.6 have already ended, and support for 1.7 end in a month's time.

The release numbering was changed. That's why we have 1.6.x - 1.7.x - 2.5.x The next series would be: 3.0.x - 3.1.x - 3.5.x

The major changes and new features would be for people who are upgrading from Joomla! 1.5 (or earlier) to 2.5
See: http://docs.joomla.org/What's_new_in_Joomla_1.6
or New Features compared to Joomla! 1.5 listed lower down on this page: http://cocoate.com/j25/new

There are free and commercial Extensions to help with the upgrade from 1.5.x to 2.5 but this needs some planning and checking that all installed extensions are (already) supported. For bigger sites one might also need to get some help.

I'm sure it's better to upgrade to 2.5! :) Just meant that for such a change in numbers (1.7 to 2.5) I'd expect more features in stead of just a lot of polished features.

The search pop-out is new, the better (wider) database support is good (wonder how many users will find it useful), the "easier" install is nice, but the previous installation was also quite easy. I agree that the updater is an improvement.

The Joomla numbering system is a little silly IMO :erm: ,but thanks for posting this.

Is the Joomla! system of installing addons much different (read: improved/automated) from 1.5?
