Joomla Site VS Custom Coded Site - Please advise

FYI - my attitude comes from your arrogant reply to my statement that the PHP fans don't have sufficient experience in .NET, not just classic ASP. I'd appreciate it if you read my post in full before making a comment like you did. The .NET Framework is intrinsically different to PHP - it's comparable to Java if you must, but definitely not PHP. Classic ASP, perhaps, but definitely not ASP.NET.
 
This is my viewpoint on the issue and I may get shot down but so be it. People complain that if custom developers develope the app it will be hard for another developer to step in and pick it up. This is especially true with PHP developers as generally people are not PHP develoeprs but more like google coders. They follow no styles or recognised paterns, they generally poorly comment and due to this massive lack of organisation and make shift coding the work does become hard to follow. This can all be avoided and you can have a really great system built which can be maintained by any decent PHP developer provided it is built correctly the first time. I think I would prefer to pick up any .net project over a PHP project written by Joe Bloggs as you can probably count on it being more readable and easier to maintain. With no ill intentions to the OP but odds are that your venture will not be services tens of thousands of hits and will not be needing massive scalability. It would function perfectly on any platform and if/when it ever gets to the stage where it is hugely popular and you are generating money from it, you probably would have under-gone a complete overhaul by then. Money dependent a custom solution written by a good developer/team should always out-do an out the box package as it is tailored for your needs exactly. At the moment, you want a basic CMS, install WordPress/Joomla, not because they are written in PHP or because they can be hosted on *nix but simply because they are easy and have a good community and support is freely available.

Strange, I currently admin close to 200 .net sites. Mostly .net nuke (around 100). The ASP.NET (not just ASP classic)equivalent of joomla.

Every one know that .net nuke is a pile of flaming dog poo, I would not compare it to Jooma. If we compare apples with apples .net nuke is the equivalent of PHP nuke :D

Agreed. I'm not debating which CMS is better here, I just commented on the fact that PHP fans here rebuke .NET exclaiming how terrible it is, when it fact it is immensely powerful for large-scale applications.

It has to be, to make up for the slow performance when running a Windows server + IIS. :p
 
I would rather design it in Drupal than joomla. I find Joomla more of a security than Joomla, and you can always extend Drupal to a shopping site using Ubercart.
 
Whatever you do, don't use Jommla. There are plenty of other PHP/MySQL free solutions that are far better.

For an easy to use CMS try www.easycmslite.com. We can work with your graphic designer to integrate a custom template for you into this CMS.

There is no shopping cart module, but that is in the pipelines. Probably will be ready towards the end of July and will integrate with netcash and paypal out of the box.
