Does anyone know how this works in practice?

In 2001 an agreement was struck with the London Stock Exchange enabling cross-dealing between the two bourses[3] and replacing the JSE's trading system with that of the LSE.[4]

Can one buy shares on both exchanges?

Not that I'm aware off.

We have the JSE and then we have 4AX

2001 to +- 2006 JSE traded on the LSE system (London server). From +- 2006 trading is back on server in Jhb. We still use the LSE's system of grouping companies into sectors.

Dual listed shares can in theory be bought in Jhb and sold in London if you bought the shares on the "shared share register".
For the rest you can only trade on the JSE.
