JSE Online Share Data

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for data on the closing share price for shares listed on the JSE (main board). I need daily closing prices (not a chart but the actual price at each point). I need data on a whole range of shares and not just one. I have tried searching but have not found anything other than charts, which don’t really help me.

I would really appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Hi
Here's something you can try.
Download and install "Fund Manager" by Beiley Software (It's free for up to 50 days or something). It has functionality to download historical data from various places. You can use the Bloomberg Historical data download function to download into Fund Manager. (To set up the correct sharecode for the retrieval, use the 3 character JSE code followed by :SJ - example APN:SJ or SAB:SJ). From Fund Manager, you can then Export a price file in various formats.
Bit of a long way round, but you don't have to pay for anything to get it.
Disadvantage - It only has Daily Open, High, Low, Close, Volume price data for 5 years.

This morning I was looking for similar data going back 12 years and was struggling to find it. The other issue is the data is invariably on share price data, it does not include dividends which are a huge portion of your growth. For instance I was wanting to compare growth figures of some managed funds to just the Satrix40 and it was very hard to do as you can't just compare share price, you also need to figure out the dividends paid out over the years.

I did find the historic Satrix40 dividends on-line for free. There is also an index called J200T which represents the total return of the top 40 with all dividends re-invested as soon as they are paid. If you don't have access to J200T (most people don't), then you can use the price of TOPTRI as a proxy. TOPTRI tracks J200T but is unfortunately very thinly traded.

Satrix40 (with dividends re-invested in Satrix40) differs from J200T in the following respects:-
1) Distributions are only paid quarterly, so they can only be re-invested quarterly.
2) A fee is deducted before distribution
3) Lately, for most investors, dividend tax is deducted.

inet bridge has a the largest historical database as well as analytical tools. http://www.inet.co.za/ I am not affiliated and have no idea on pricing.
