Hi all, I have been trying to get into developing for far longer than I anticipated. I have a full time job, and I'm also doing my Honors in Information Systems. My problem is I desperately want to become a developer but I don't seem to find the time to study or practice. Now I am at a point where giving up my full time job and getting an entry level/junior position is more appealing to me as I would like to pursue a career in it. There are disadvantages of course but I feel the reward far outweighs them.

Has anyone ever started from scratch pursuing a passion?

Most companies I have applied at are offering graduate positions which is not what I'm looking for, any advice would be appreciated.

Everyone starts somewhere. The longer you wait the longer it will take, if it's a dream and passion and you will survive financially, then go for it. But what seems as a fun job can be very irritating at times.

Never doubt how soul destroying "take data from DB -> process -> save data to DB" can be.

This is why I switched to scientific programming... I couldn't afford new shoes all the time.

I suggest C and C++ for production work, and Python for prototyping. Other people often use R or functional languages for prototyping, but Python is rapidly trending upward in this space.

And for the life of me I can't figure out why. Makes me want to pull my damn teeth out!
