Refract Marketing, a small marketing agency in Johannesburg, is looking for an enthusiastic, creative PHP Developer to take control of existing web-based applications and help to conceptualise and create new and interesting solutions for our clients. If you can look at existing code, understand how a system works and have great ideas on how to improve it, this position may be for you.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for working with our creative team to conceptualise and develop various features of eCommerce, websites & other custom applications. This includes developing various user interfaces, programming using a variety of web-based languages and technologies, integrating the applications with backend databases and conducting various tests.
Additionally, and very importantly, you will be responsible for the takeover, management and continued development of an in-house CMS system currently running corporate websites & client applications. This will require a high level of aptitude to pick up and work with existing systems.
This role provides a diverse opportunity to be creatively and actively involved in the conceptualisation and execution of a number of different projects, as well as the opportunity to pitch your own ideas and explore new areas of development.

Skills & Experience
- Ideally a Junior/Mid-Level developer with at least 2 years’ experience in a similar environment
- A high proficiency in PHP development for web applications, websites and system administration (Minimum Requirement)
- High proficiency and experience in MySQL, SQL, JavaScript (Ajax, jQuery, Mootools), HTML5, CSS3 and responsive design essential
- Experience in systems/database design, development, administration and tuning – preferably in MySQL
- Some experience with developing (and troubleshooting) Javascript (jQuery specifically) for AJAX interactions.
- The ability to perform complex product design activities, which may require extensive research and analysis.
- The ability to pick up and work with existing code and systems
- The ability to clearly and concisely document development work
- Superb communication skills, both written and spoken
- Creative and lateral thinking
Advantageous
- Some experience with another web-based language
- Some experience developing eCommerce systems as well as experience in Wordpress and Joomla
- Linux/Unix command line experience
