Just can’t get enough

All these people wondering why the Government is holding on to these shares, when the title says it all... it's just plain Greed! Is that so hard to understand?

Thanks to Lloyd Gedye for another great article.

Yeah it's sad man, they really can't let go.
Ivy and Lyndall really won't roll over and play dead.

“It is the baggage that has come from this ‘managed liberalisation’ approach to life,” says Gale. “They admit they have to privatize, but they’re not ready to let go of the reins.”

That ^ really knocks the point home unfortunately.
They just don't know when to say "Freedom"!

Telkom chief of strategy Naas Fourie told the Mail & Guardian that it did not insist on government being locked into Vodacom and that the lock-in is strictly based on an agreement between government and Vodafone. “Telkom suggests that this question be posed to government as it is not appropriate for the company to speak on behalf of government,” said Fourie.

Government would shoot the tires of our cars out before answering such questions  Don't do it Mr. Gedye! ;)

Seems to me as if Vodacom's competitors had better concentrate on rest- of- Africa & offshore business; the current south african government is well known to do everything ethical and unethical to advantage its investments.

I may be naive but is it a terrible thing? As Lloyd Gedye pointed out the American government are investing in banks. Is it such a bad thing to invest in a vehicle that looks like it could make money? The American public will (possibly) reap some rewards through the virtual nationalization of the banks when the shares are sold down the line, hopefully for profit. I'm not sure about the mechanics but government holding these assets is not the same as the ANC holding these assets (...O.K....I may be stretching it a little) but ideally these are assets that will be funding any governments coffers and could be used to do 'good things'. The problems I do have are the obvious conflict of interests which Im not sure how to get around and the fact that ex DoC players like Andile Ngcaba leave government positions, sail into jobs at IS and a few years down the line end up being personally entitled to R824-million. That is a 'bad thing'.

Enjoy my hard earned cash guys. Enjoy it. In fact why don't you use the money to buy some shares in Neotel, MTN, IS, Dark Fibre Africa. Then you can own everything. We all know how well you run the companies you own...

I think that Guvment has realised on the missed fixed line opportunity and is now focused on the lucrative mobile market. Fortunately (I think) there are 2 other mobile operators so hopefully guvment won't have it their entire way.

The SAgovernment (pty) ltd.

Really, they should get on with the business of running the country and leave telecoms to private business. Jeez.

One constant criticism of the South African government’s handling of the telecommunications sector has been that it is too invested, that it can’t play the role of shareholder and policy director at the same time.

This statement has hit the nail right on the head. This is what we've been saying for years, and because of it we're still in the technological dark ages.
