Just a post to let people know what speeds you get with 1mbps ADSL. I on average am getting 107 kb/s. It pretty awesome and one can really notice the difference. Movies stream beautifully now. Hope this helps! :)

Cost to upgrade!

Phoned yesterday to upgrade from the 512 kbps package. Within 24 hours the new service has been activated. There are no upgrade costs.

Nice! :D

Did you upgrade from an existing ADSL package? Is there a cost involved for upgrading?
If you were stupid enough to go for the bundled ADSL package where you get a free modem and a contract for two years, you will have to fork out a monthly penalty of R75 for the remainder of the contract.

Die Telscum, die.

Ghatto,

If you have an ADSL package on a 2 year contract and upgrade to the 1mbps service, you will be penalised? Are you sure about this?

Syzygy78,

I've just phoned 0800 375 375 to upgrade to 1024 and I was told that I will have to fork out an extra 75 bucks per month for the remainder of the contract for breach of contract. I queried it and was told that this is the way it is. Totally AMA-zing.

So does anyone know IF you upgrade to 1024 and are not happy with the speeds etc, can you downgrade to 512 and what is the cost??

Spose you will be slapped with another penalty for breach of friggin contract. :confused:

When it comes to telkom they can never leave you truly happy. Since telkom put a foot forward its time for them to take their 2 steps backwards which will

take them the whole of this month and next to complete and for those people who have counted 2 months (whole of this month and whole of next month) November

will be the part where the stepping is complete.

Welcome to the end of uncapped local and the start of pay per gig billing. Lets do a calculation on how much one can actually do in a day/week/month (work on

a 30day month), we will leave upload alone lets say pure download. To be safe we work on 800k so 100kB/s

1 min = 6MB
1 hour = 360MB
1 day = 8.64GB
1 Week = 60.68GB
1 Month = 259.2GB

Of course that would have to be like 80% useage for every second of the month but thats what the speeds should give.

With the line speed capabilities worked out we can move onto our crippling factor, the cap and in future, the pay per gig

You could hit your cap in just under 9 hours, so lets move onto what pay per gig would cost at the estimated cost of about R60 per gig (will probably be a

bit more I think)

6MB = R0.36
360MB = R21.58
8.64GB = R518
60.68GB = R3626
259.2GB = R15540
-----------------------------------------------------------
Why oh why do we have to be crippled so heavily in this Country

Well, when I downgraded from 512 to 384, they charged me a "migration fee" of R330 or something. I thought this was retarded, and challenged Telkom, getting to some senior people. I asked what I was paying for? The told me it was the labour involved in downgrading my line. I challenged them saying a) that there is no way it costs that much, and b) that the same labour is involved migrating up from 384 to 512, yet that costs nothing. I fought this for ages, but Telkom wouldn't budge. They basically punish you for wanting to save some money each month.

I would think the same would be true between 512 and 1024k "migrations"

Ja. I'm using Axxess.

Just downloaded the new Winamp Full at a steady 103K/sec.

Not quite... it's a contended service. If we assume that Telkom follows the UK norm of a 50:1 contention ratio for their consumer services, you should get a whole lot less than that. Call you 1mbps your 'burst' capacity for want of a better term. It's not a diginet line guaranteed to operate at full capacity for a month as you have outlined.

But in principle you are right - it will be possible to burn through a 3GB cap in less than a day pretty easily. In fact, you should be able to get through 3GB in a single session.

Ye well if I use a download manager or a well seeded torrent and am uncapped I can sit at 460-480kbit on my 512 for as long as the download is. I spose it all depends on the load of your exchange.

One never gets full speed on ADSL for some reason..

i get more than what i pay for... :D

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 9.797 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 416.5 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 51 (kiloBytes/second)

Bandwidth Limited ? 1024 still worse than 384 speeds

:eek: I also just got enabled....Applied this morning,,,,,,,,,,now done.......This is the old type of service I was used to. Before invention of call centres. MY Speed have not changed with TCPIQ test program. Seems like the modem or something is bandwidth limited

See http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpee...ountryId=196&ConnectionId=14382&UserId=171952

The change is zero apart from peaks to 330 download. Somewhere my setup is a B@llsup

Please post TCPIQ link for 1024 to compare Please ?????????
