SABC radio news reported this story, with an explanation that makes some sense. The names of the commission members were announced, then subsequently the (broad) terms of reference were finalised. Once the conflict of interest became clear, it was prudent for him to step down.

If he's a smart guy the real reason would be that he doesn't want to be on the suicide mission called "saving Eskom", it can only end badly for one's career in the long run.

Conflict of interest becomes a convenient exit from a suicide mission without embarrassing him or CR.
