Just ordered WiMax

If you are outside the adsl footprint, then wimax will not be offered to you. I don't know why we (telkom) are offering wimax support on 0800 375375 option 4 then option 3, because majority of the customers who were on the wimax trial are still on it. They said it would roll out commercially come August but I can't see it personally happening because there are a few bugs which need to be ironed out.

Only Cape Town, Joburg, Pretoria (who initially only ran the trial) and Durban will receive wimax.

Equipment like I stated in a previous post, will be a 1 port ethernet indoor unit and a outdoor antenna which is placed on your roof, the company providing it is called Alvarion.

At the moment speeds are at 512Kb...

Umm I'm not sure whatelse there is too be said.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

It has been launched and I've ordered it. How can it not have been rolled out then?

I finally received my order number for installation after 3 weeks of frustration and having to reapply for 3 weeks. Eventually I signed up for application of ADSL on dobroadband and once they saw that no lines have been installed in my area they offered me WiMax.

The install should take place this week, but I won't be holding my breath...

omg...telkom are f'n idiots.... I called 10219... they told me to call technical support, 10215, they told me to call business, 10217, they intern told me to call 10219... I HATE THE DAMN FOOLS that get jobs in this country...

@superjuice... what EXACTLY did you ask for.

I had the same problem. It looks like you need to phone 10217 and if they tell you to phone 10219 tell them to check with their supervisor because currently only 10217 has the power to forward a request to the WIMAX guys to contact you for an order.

Not yet, there was an issue with the base station I'm supposed to connect to. Telkom needs to sort the issue then the sub contractors will return to do the installation.

A problem, thats to be expected with Telkom :p

Telkom can't offer wi-max yet. It's in trial still. You can't order it even cause the agents at 10219 haven't done the training yet. It will only come into effect after they ugrade their CBS system to a new system which was called "clarify". It'sthe system they use to capture your order. Training only starts in Nov 2007.

Wi-max is the future and if get it right to order it from a telkom agent, you will still wait. Your order will stand until they have few 1000 for that area. Have you been seeing some telkom guys install some cables in your area. The bright orange piping. Yep. Wi-Max.

Reliable source. The guy who will be heading the training for Cape Town Broadband center.

@photonman, is there a trick or magic words I need to say to get WiMax from Telkodemonopolies that you can share with us - I'm asking quite seriously bcos I've tried ordering WiMax and was turned away by call centre agents - in fact 10219 tells customers to call 0800375375 and they tell customers to call 10217 who in turn tell me that I cannot replace pathetic HomeDSL313.6kbits/s with WiMax that's up to 512kbits/s...

Well atm it's only really a option to those who fall outside of the adsl footprint and who cannot receive adsl in that regard.
I need better upload and download speeds, but I'm too far from the local exchange, I have often been told by technicians coming out to my place that ADSL should never have been installed in the first place [back then HomeDSL192kbits/s] as the copper distance is more than 5km, so what do I do? - I would cancel ADSL if I thought I would then be able to get WiMax, but I suspect I won't be able to get WiMax nor ADSL again after that.

PS: Most of my neighbours also cannot get ADSL due to being too far from the local exchange.

Really guys, try to get it!...Then we can talk.....I'm telling you....it's available for public consumption......The gaents know what wi-max is but they cannot sell it to you....They don't have the system to sell it.It's not that they do'nt want to igve it(It's actually here for IP TV which will be launched soon afterwards, but just try to order it then you see.

What happens if you're in the DSL footprint but your landlord doesn't want to allow a DSL line installation?
