Just saw new Telkom add.?

I saw a new Telkom add on DSV claiming "The Next Generation Network fro Telkom is here" and claimng how it will change government, business, schools, hospitals, etc and that it is different than the old one? 120000 km off fibre optic cables?
What is that about?

Fibre backbone and next generation network - backhaul links. What we need is an upgrade of the local links and the local copper network before we see any real difference.
 
I think their Metronet network should also assist to alleviate current bottlenecks in their ADSL network – maybe guys in the know can tell us a bit more here.
 
Maybe we will see some of the bottlenecks disappear after SWC 2010 when they free up all the national fibre links that is being reserved for exclusive FIFA use.
 
Telkom MetroEthernet seems to starts at 4096k and probably will enter the market above Diginet services that max at just below 2048k. Its going to be costly...

"Customers have a choice of bandwidth ranging from 4Mbps up to 600Mbps on their MetroLAN, and will specify the bandwidth on a per site basis. Bandwidth on the Metro Ethernet network is scalable in small increments and additional bandwidth can be added to services relatively easy without any hardware upgrades. " - from www.telkom.co.za

I am sure there are some plans for faster ADSL - but nothing confirmed that I know of.

Durban's metro fibre is a good offering...
 
Telkom has been upgrading the exchanges to be ADSL2+ compliant for the last 2 years now, enabling speeds of up to 24Mbits download. They have completed the upgrade nationwide and will be offering the service soon.

This is confirmed by a Telkom employee.

Though there is no mention of the caps increasing. Now you can get capped in under 5 minutes! yay!

And yet I can still only get a max speed of 3MB before my line dies :mad:

It would be really good if this was the case.
And yeah. Capped in 5 Mins. So true.
SA needs UNCAPPED.

I don't understand how, in 2009, Telkom's cap can still be 5GB. If I wanted to, I could probably do that in a week. I actually need 20GBs per month, not 5GB.

Don't know. Gary was venting for months on end that we should just hold out untill October this year (o wait, we are almost through October), and then we will see major changes. What the change are to be, he didn't say anything.

Like I said, we are almost through Oct and nothing happened. Gary is very tight lipped and he is dodging the questions about it now since it didn't happen. Seems that his 'reliable sources' weren't that reliable :rolleyes:

But hey, Like Gary says. Always be optimistic, there are actually a few days left in the month, so it may still happen... Then there is always Oct 2010, or Oct 2011 etc. :D
