Just some interpretation Please - Should I be happy with this?

Hi all,

I am quiet lost when it comes to attenuation and SNR, etc, etc. Could you please have a look at these figures and tell me if I should complain? I suffer from signal drops and as the crow flies, I am 2.5 km away from the exchange.
Router has been up now for 6 hrs 15 min:

Your SNR isn't too great, as for the attenuation and how far from the exchange you are - not too sure if they add up or not.

What router are you using?
 
Can you force the router to G_DMT mode?

You should be able to get stable 4mbps...but ADSL2+ sacrifices range for speed. And 2.5k is pushing it for ADSL2+. So in your case G_DMT might work out better.

With a bit of luck the mode is the issue rather than the line.

Might become an issue once the 10mbps upgrades hit though

That being said...I'm not exactly and ADSL2+ expert so lets hear some opinions...

Your attenuation is super high. Your line has way to much noise. You should complain.
 
Seems to be a decent router, has a broadcom chipset which is favourable for a longer line.

I'm 1.1km from the exchange (copper distance) and my downstream attenuation is 15.5db. Is your snr pretty stable or does it fluctuate at times? Possibly around the time your line drops?

How often does it drop?

SNR is stable mostly. The drops is about once every 20 minutes or so. Difficult to say because most drops I experience is on wi-fi devices and not sure if it might be a wi-fi problem as well, although Wi-fi signal is full at the time

Truth be told I have been complaininh for 5 weeks but ISP keeps blaming distance from exchange. Although I had SNR 13 and Attenaution: 8, 2 years ago. Tired of complaining, but will keep it up on your advice

No, attenuation is not dependent on line noise. And no I don't think its unusually high.

Untick everything except the G_DMT, restart router and report back. Might help, might not...but its a quick test that might fix it. The DSLAM Telkom side should adapt to the unticking.

Try and check your router to see if it is the line or ISP next time your Internet drops.

Although every 20 minutes doesn't sound right. If the snr is stable at those stats, you shouldn't have issues with the line dropping. I know friends who have worse stats and a stable line.

Lol. Sorry, i am quiet stupid woth these things. Maybe the majority is wi-fi issues. I really do not know.

Only G_DMT ticked. Router restarted. SNR: 162 and Att: 415

lol - OK. No worries - I'm told not everyone is an expert at everything. :p

Well from the router stats we can see that there is definitely something funky with the ADSL regardless of wifi. You might have a wifi issue on top of that but the given info doesn't tell us anything about the wifi situation.

You might want to download netstumbler onto the laptop - very very cool tool to investigate wifi stuff. e.g. it can draw you a live graph of signal strength as you walk around the house with your laptop. Not going to go into detail here though....thats a thread in its own right.

Do the D-GMT thing I said and report back.

Well thats a decent improvement.

Sit within easy wifi range of the router and see if things are better.

Also remember...the quality of your ISP/data will affect your perceived internet browsing experience. Though unless yours is crap that should be an issue for now.

Lol, does the new stats mean the improvement is good enough to stop complaining? Naturally I will still monitor the drops and the wi-fi situation with that program, as advised.
 
Stats are not the determining factor. I'm saying the stats have improved and I think the ADSL part should now *probably* be stable....but ultimately it comes down to whether you're still experiencing issues or not.

No. Possibly dodgy ADSL connected to possibly dodge wifi means you can never say for sure what the issue is.

Get a LAN cable, connect that to the router and then judge the ADSL based on that. If that works trouble free then create a new thread for the wifi issues with details relevant to that. One thing at a time...
 
Great. Thank you everyone for your assistance and thank you HavocXphere for the improvement. You all rock. 5 weeks of googling netted me nothing and you all help within a few hrs. Ok, I will follow your advice further with the lan cable. :)
