Hi there guys

Looking to buy a new TV, I see today's Game pamphlet in the S,Times has this 32' Smart LED TV. Ad does not say much "Smart Android". Going for R3k instead of R4k.

Google results could not bring up much.

Does anyone know or have one of thee tv's to provide feedback.

Also i need to get a telly Licence; been borrowing in the past; can I get new Telly License on the spot at Game?

Feedback is appreciated.

I would add 3K and rather get this deal:
http://www.guzzle.co.za/specials/view/505620/

Yes, it's 3K more, and I'm guessing you are on a budget.... but it's a Samsung. it's a plasma. and it's not a 32", it's not a 42", but a 51".
You will thank yourself later... 3K isn't that much more considering what you're getting.

If you really only have 3K, that's cool - but I'm pretty sure you can get a 42" at that price if you look around more or get a good deal...R3K for a 32" isn't really what I would call a bargain.

Makro and Game have an Samsung HD-ready 32" for R3299 (Makro) and R3499 (Game). I've never looked for the visual difference between a 720p and 1080p image on 32", but the build quality of a Samsung is better in my experience. The specifications on the Samsung are here, http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/consumer/tv-audio-video/television/led-tv/UA32EH4003RXXA-spec, but I cannot find a match on Google for the JVC part number.

Since Game carries both the Samsung and the JVC, go have a look at the two side-by-side and see if the 720p v 1080p difference is even visible on a 32" under normal conditions.

Yeah, rather do that!

The 51" for R5999 is an epic deal though... R2700 more, but it's a LOT bigger.
(Almost 3 times the total area)

1080p is 1080p. Buy the JVC if you like the price. 32" is tolerable, but after a year or so, you will wish you had gone bigger. As for plasma, the blacks are nice, but power consumption will cost you significantly more than an LED in the long run. I would suggest LED.

Not true, but you can tell us how much significantly more is?

Where do you get your facts from?

The typical power consumption for this 51" Plasma TV Keeper is suggesting is 118W. An equivalent LED panel consumes 110W.

People are still comparing ancient Plasma's with modern LED's.

Modern plasma uses about 1.5 - 2 times as much than LCD. It sounds like a lot, but when looked at in Rands, it's not much at all. Calculations done a few years back were about R20 per month extra for average night time viewing, and R50 per month for above average viewing - obviously amounts that people buying modern flat screen TVs can afford.

The PS51F4000 has shortcomings though. 852x480 resolution mainly, which would be fantastic for SD viewing, but in order for HD to look acceptable, one would need to be at least 4m back.

Unfortunately it's not even HD Ready.

So it's important to find out viewing distance, viewing conditions and content before recommending. Generally people going with 32" are either doing close up viewing (in which case resolution is more important), or on a budget.

Thanks for the headsup guys...I was of the very limited view of "older" Plasma vs newer LED's.

I dont wish to stray too much from between R3-R3,5k; my lounge is by no means enormous.

Another option I found is a Sinotec 39" FHD LED for R3395 at Game but that special ends just before my BoneyM (bonus) gets paid :(

PNP Hyper has the same tv for R3699 & incl a very basic "home theater system".

Had a Sinotec 32" LCD before & was very impressed with it.

The JVC still sounds keen as well just so hard to source info; without going to shops; what makes the tv "Smart".

What do you intend watching, and from what viewing distance?

I've bought a cheap "full HD 1920x1080" Telefunken TV before at Game. Turns out it did not have a native 1920x1080 resolution when I got home, but it could accept the signal. Total POS. I took it back immediately and got my money back. They had signed me up for a TV license at the same time, so I took my laptop and HDMI cable with to Makro (to make 100% damn sure) and got a nice Samsung. With Samsung make sure you set the HDMI port to PC mode if you will be using it with a PC.

So make sure of the native resolution, if that is what you are after.

Mostly just DSTV (SD); Series (HD) & some X360 gaming.
Distance wise I would say about 2m-2,5m away or thereabout.

Simply weighing up the options; I'm I being "cheap" in not considering a FHD or HD Ready; even; quality 32" like a Samsung or Sony.Pay more for the brand & get that reknown picture quality. The "cheaper" brands like Sinotec; JVC seem great value. Not Logik; Telefunkun & Sansui; heard too many stories.

If the Game 39" Sinotec special is running end of the week will most likely take that.

I have a 43 inch JVC FHD 3D Plasma which I bought earlier this year at a good price. Here are my thoughts.

The panel is excellent, the image is clear, the blacks are black and the colours are good. There has been no burn-in. The 3D function works well. It does not have the plasma 'buzz', and you have to be REALLY close to see the wondering dots.

The SMART bit is to do with the OS which is Android, but I cannot tell what version. They (JVC) have their own app store and you can download apps for streaming etc. They are however all in Chinese (when I last checked which was about five months ago), and the movies in the stream are all hard sub-titled in Chinese too. It is essentially pretty crap so the SMART bit is not really worth it, or SMART at all. If you want SMART it would probably be best to go for LG or Samsung.

You might be able to side load apps, but I haven't tried that for fear of bricking the device. If you want Netflix (or similar) to work on this platform I would be surprised if you managed to get it working, but as I say, have not tried yet.

The internal speakers produce an audible buzz / vibration at certain levels and frequencies. I don't use them, so for me it is not a big issue, but it does point to a problem with build quality.

The Ethernet port is 'loose' on my device. You really have to wiggle the plug around to get a connection.

I have been trying to get active 3D glasses from the folks that sold me the set in Cape Town, but have so far been unsuccessful. So support from the supplier and NuWorld is not great either.

One last niggle is that the HDMI pass-through on the set does not support DTS from the source, though I cannot guarantee that an LG or Samsung will either.

Personally, if I had an extra few rondts in my wallet I would have gone for an LG or Samsung but didn't because of budget constraints.

Would be interested to know what you decide to do. I think you will find that the picture is good, but everything else is not so good (read sound and SMART).

My folks have the 39" Sinotech "LED"...

It does the job... but thats about it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it's not native Full HD 1920x1080. It's incorrectly advertised as one. It's 1024x768 and only accepts a 1080p source, downscaling it to 1024x768.

You could also look for a second-hand 40" Samsung/LG/Sony. 40" would be the minimum you'd ideally want from 2 - 2.5m.

Otherwise the Sinotec seems like the best bet if you don't settle for a branded 32".
