So the 51F4000 is actually crappy? Or am I wrong?

Only 1024 x 480 resolution?

I had a PS42B430 (1024 x 768 res) before affirmative shoppers came around our place last Sunday.

Now looking for something similar or better.

It's Samsung's entry Level. The EH4003 is has lower specs (and is also more expensive, strangely)
I don't think resolution is THAT big of a deal with plasma, pixels and colors get blended together more with plasma and hence why you won't see the Pixelation/Stairstep-Color-Artifacting stuff as much.

That's why I would rather take a low-res Samsung Plasma over a Full-HD LED from a cheaper brand (such as sinotec or whatever) - You don't see ANY of that artifacting rubbish even on SD content.

F4000 = 852x480
F4500 = 1024x768

Direct replacement would be the PS43F4500. One up in size, the PS51F4500.

Try go for the PS51F5500 though, 51", FHD 1920x1080, 3D, SMART, nice stand, etc.

100%. And resolution isn't important once one is outside the range where the difference in detail is perceivable.

From about 3m, on a 40", the difference between HD/FHD is not noticeable.

And from 3m, a 43" 1024x768 plasma is fantastic for HD. It would be hard to spot the difference between it and a 40" 1920x1080 LCD. And the plasma also offers the best SD picture quality due to its native resolution being 4:3 (same as SD). The reason it's wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio is because the pixels are rectangular, not square.

APoc184, I'm sure you were happy with HD on your 42" 1024x768 plasma.

At the end of the day, unfortunately numbers sell. However 1024x768 plasmas are at less of a disadvantage than most are led to believe. Plus its picture quality - blacks and colours - will be better than similarly priced and even more expensive entry - mid range LCDs...

Thanks for the advice. Would be nice to upgrade to the bigger size while I don't care for 3D at all.

You might be right. The pricelist I'm looking at, which could definitely be wrong, says 852x480 for both.

Either way, it would be a downgrade. Rather look at 1024x768 or 1920x1080.
 
Called IC Canal Walk now; they only have 1 unit of the F4000 & Blue Route has 8. Rang Game in CW & they will match the IC great price of R2999 & sort me out with a TV Lic; IC said they could not.

So plan on collecting the F4000 at R3k at Game in the morrow. They have plenty of units. This weeks "special" is flogging the older EH4003 for R3199.

Checked price of bigger 2nd hand quality TV's as well & not impressed.

The satisfaction of a new set with warranty & quality make appeals to me.
 
Had to go with the 2012 Sammy from Game. IC in PE don't have any of the 2,999 deals in stock.

Bummed it only has one HDMI port, but the picture quality is really nice, very deep blacks and nice contrast.
 
Sorry for the hijack again. But not going to start a new thread when all the knowledgable forumites are already in here.

Insurance came to the party today and I now have a max budget of R9000 to pick a TV.

What would you guys suggest? We mainly watch SD content via my XBMC Media Player. Some HD movies on there but only about 10%. No longer have DSTV so sport is not being watched anymore. Previously decided on plasma exactly for that reason.

Sit no more than 3m away from the set. Unfortunately I do not have the best lighting available for Plasma viewing. Room is quite bright at any given time. It was the only thing that irritated me about my previous plasma, the reflections.

PS51F5500 51" FHD 3D SMART plasma... But reflections will be similar, except now your TV is 9" bigger.

Curtains?

LCD is better if you're mainly watching in bright conditions. That said, they're all glossy/reflective these days too... Less so than plasma though.

If most of your viewing is done after hours, late afternoon etc. then definitely plasma.

If you feel you'll be doing more daytime viewing, or a considerable amount, we can go back to the drawing board...
 
I've also got this from makro for 9k. Games price in store is actually 10k (R9999), I think the website hasn't been updated to reflect their in store price.

No, The Plasma is better.
It's smoother, has more vivid colors, deeper blacks, 180 degree viewing angle, has 3D, and better for SD content.

Just look at the difference in remotes. What you get with the UA50F5500:

That remote is damn cool!

Plasma screens hurt my eyes though. I'm not knocking them; personally I really don't like them.
