Hi All,

I need some advice. Game is selling the following LED for R5999:

http://www.4home.co.za/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=2138&category_id=192&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=90

I'm really thinking of getting this. Only thing is, I can't find any info about this TV on the net. The only sites google returns are South African sites.

Anybody have any first hand experience with this panel, or any other JVC for that matter? Is this worth it or is it a crappy tv? (will be using it as a 2nd PC monitor btw)

Thanks!

You might have better luck using the correct sub-forum - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/forumdisplay.php/161-DSTV-TopTV-SABC-TV-and-Multimedia

It's not a "LED". It's a LED back-lit LCD, only the light source differs. As good as the marketing gimmick sounds, they actually tend to be worse than CCFL back-lit LCDs in terms of colours and uneven lighting due to the edge LEDs.

Anyway, I can't give you a detailed answer. For PC use, you need to enable 1:1 pixel mapping, disable overscan, and enable 4:4 RGB.

Samsung's do this very easily, simply by renaming the input source in the menu i.e. HDMI 1 to DVI PC.

I also feel 42" is too big (in terms of text sharpness). Unless you already have a 42"? I have a 32", text is sharp. Wouldn't go bigger. You can get the Samsung LA32D550 32" for around R3,500 - R4,000, amazing as a PC monitor (I have LA32C550).

Thanks. I have a Samsung 32" HD ready at the moment and really want to up the resolution, so going for full HD. Decided to up the size while I'm at it

If it's for use mainly as a PC monitor, i.e. to do work on, then you'd be best getting a FHD 32", like the LA32D550. You should have ±1m viewing distance.

42" is too big for PC use/worl. MyBb had quite a few 42" users, and after a while they came back and said it wasn't good. PM Keeper, he's one user I remember.

If it's for gaming/media, then by all means go for a 42".

I'll be using it as a second monitor (will be running display in duplicate mode) and will be using the 42" for gaming and media mostly (maybe some websurfing while staying in bed now and then).

You got me all worried about this whole LED-LCD thing. I have no idea which LCD to buy now. Makro has a special on a 42" LG for R4999 ( http://www.lg.com/in/tv-audio-video/lcd-tv/LG-42LK430.jsp )

Is this a better deal?

Thanks for the help

Honestly, I'd go for the Samsung LA40D550, because they are the most popular TVs between Samsung, LG and Sony LCDs; and technically superior for connecting to PC.

It is important to read through the three panel types: TN, IPS and PVA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD#Types

I personally prefer Samsung's S-PVA panels over LG's IPS panels, as they have better blacks and contrast while maintaining 8 bits of colour per pixel; but also having better viewing angles and lower input lag compared to IPS, generally speaking, makes them the better choice for PC use.

LA40D550 have been on special for around R4,999, but expect to pay up to R5,500 from your usual mass mart stores.

I couldnt find that specific samsung anywhere canal walk for under R6k last night. Hi-Fi corp had a special on their Sony Bravia 40" LCD's for R5500. Game ended up giving me the same model for R5300 after a bit of bargaining ( i love their policy )

I can't be happier! This TV outperforms my current 22" monitor (samsung 226BW). Better colours, crisper text, everything!

Erg, shopping at Canal Walk... :p

Not sure how it compares with the LA40D550, but congrats nonetheless. AFAIK the xxCX520 is the competitor to the xxD550.

You have a better panel now than your 22", that's for sure.

I was trying to convince a colleague about this the other day and he would just repeat the following "My friend has a LED and the picture is much better than my LCD." After this went on for a while I discovered he was comparing MNET HD (friends LED) and his MNET SD.../facepalm

Correct me if i am wrong...but i thought all LED at the moment are not true LED, but LCD with LED backlight?

Yup but that doesn't mean they won't look better :D. I will let you know later today about led vs plasma :D. It will also be nice to compare my led with my sisters lcd. See how much of a difference led makes.

You won't, realistically, be giving us these comparisons you claim, hey. Comparing x R9,000 LCD with y R5,000 plasma really means nothing, hope you realise.

100%, would be appreciated if everyone referred to them correctly so as to not further the marketing gimmick. ;)

Well it's comparing plasma vs led. The only difference is the led is 46" so it is more expensive but a 42" led is roughly the same price as a 42" plasma. I saw a 42" sammy for 5.5k at game so there is not much difference actually apart form the size. I could be wrong but surely the 9k cost is the bigger size and led? So it's actually a direct comparison in my opinion, only the size that differs unless a 46" led has a better picture than a 42" led.

No, it's comparing a specific entry JVC plasma (with no decent menu settings which prevented you from getting what you need when connecting to a PC, which we don't even know is really FHD) with a specific Samsung LCD (which has decent menus and options and was originally advised as a better option for PC).

The manu and ability to put the Samsung in PC Mode will be of more benefit than screen type (plasma vs LCD).

It is not "broadly" comparing plasma vs LCD, not sure why you would think this.

I'm not aware of any LED TVs at the R9k mark.

40" LED backlit LCD goes for R5,999 - R6,500 minimum usually. Samsung 43" plasma R4,499 - R4,999. HD Ready, I know.

The closest pricing match between LED-LCD and plasma would be PS51D550 51" FHD R9k - R9.9k vs Samsung UA46D5000/5500 46" FHD also at about R9k. The plasma will blow the LED-LCD out the water at PQ.

Yup but i will be comparing movies, colour and so on. Well i saw a samsung plasma and it doesn't look much better. Pixals are still big which means lack of clarity when using a pc.

I saw a 56" led jvc and the picture was mind blowing. Plasma is good but from about 3m so for movies and so on it will be great but for gaming hmmm it will be interesting to compare.

Well it must be full hd as it says it is and the people who do the jvc stuff say it is, plus 720 doesn't look as natural as full hd.

You seem to think backlit led's offer no real picture improvement over lcd but i will see as my sister has a 42" lcd plus i have 23" lcd's and 24" so i am very interested to see how much better the colours will be.
