JVC 42" LED - worth it?

Yup but i will be comparing movies, colour and so on. Well i saw a samsung plasma and it doesn't look much better. Pixals are still big which means lack of clarity when using a pc.

On Saturday I had a look at the Samsung plasmas again, the reflection on them are just terrible. Like standing in front of a live mirror. :p

Unless you have a dark room/basement with no light, it might work, otherwise stay far away.

Sure, comparing movies, colour and so on on two specific TVs which differ quite a bit in price - barely a "comparison of two techs". I could bring along a Panasonic Viera plasma and blow both TVs out the water, for example. Or a high-end Sony LED (real) TV.

Big pixels would mean HD Ready. But if you read Mike Smit (any my and others') posts, you will realise that even on a 100+" projector'ed image, 720p's "bigger pixels" don't matter as much as marketing makes it out to matter.

It's interesting, seeing as JVC's US website lists no 42" FHD plasmas in their entire product history. Many older LCDs, particularly the cheapies, were marketed as Full HD but could not natively display Full HD. It was merely accepted and then scaled to some close-ish resolution.

LED backlit LCD's don't offer better picture, though? In fact it tends to be worse than CCFL backlit LCD due to the more intensive LED back-lighting which often washes out colours even more than LCD; also a new problem of diffusing LED back-lighting unevenly, leading to worse light bleed than CCFL-:CD and even a new problem called "light spots" (badly diffused light creating light spots all over the screen, not jsut bleeding at the sides).

Provide links which prove what you think, that LED backlit LCD offers better PQ than CCFL backlit LCD? ;)

Those who actually own plasmas comment on this very forum about this very subject. It doesn't affect them like you exaggerate in your lie. Sure, their rooms generally aren't the brightest, with no direct light falling on the TV etc., but by no means dark rooms/basements with no light. Ultimately, it's you who has to deal with the lies you make up. Could not be bothered discussing things with someone so grossly enveloped by marketing gimmick and isle shopping/judging at Game/Makro.

Yea because it's a 43" Full HD plasma not a 42". It is there i showed the link in the last thread on that pdf, it was there. I recall you even had a look at it.

Does his projector have big pixels? I barely even notice the pixels on my 720 projector.

I won't need links, i will have my eyes :D. So i can see if led is better than plasma and also my sister's lg lcd. :D.

I doubt the blacks will be black like the plasma but i cannot wait to see all the colours and so on. I just bought this and told em to deliver, my mate says the picture quality is out the top draw. He better be right :D

I'm sure with your sceptical nature ;) you can understand that one can't fully trust a poorly designed pdf from a local distributor (apologies if the pdf was directly from JVC themselves), only available on a few SA shopping sites. No reviews or anything of the sort on any model of JVC 42/43" model on the net, only SA shopping sites. That sounds dubious to me...

Look it's not too important at the end of the day because the JVC is clearly a "cheapie" plasma based on its limited functionality (which Samsung, LG, etc. offer). Would be nice to know if it really is FHD. I'm not doubting your eyes, but on my 42" 720p plasma, pixels are about 1x2mm... You?

I don't know, but the pixels on a 100" 720p projected image would surely be bigger than that of a 42/43" 720p plasma, which is why I was wondering why you were finding the pixels too big. Does your projector project smaller than 42"? Or do you not use it for PC work (that was the original subject IIRC). Sorry if drifting OT here?

I don't know how to explain that you are by no means comparing plasma vs LCD & LCD. Maybe I just need to be as simple as possible. Do shops only sell one model of plasma/LCD?

Mate that says its awesome, after his brief test & observation of marketing gimmick from an aisle in a mass mart store lit by 1000s of watts of lighting

(No offence to you or your mate :D.)

Holy F, this tv is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The picture quality is just amazing. Beyond amazing actually. It looks just like my 23" but bigger. Crystal clear. Cannot really say i notice too much different with the colours.

I am in heaven here. In pc mode this monitor is mind blowing. Movies look incredible and flow beautifully. Bf 3 looks amazing as well.

Perhaps my plasma is 720 but it says full hd, this samsung says full hd as well. All i have to say is WOW. Crystal clear, beautiful colours. I am sitting 1m away from it and it is clear and beautiful.

9k bloody well spend. I would say movies look better on the plasma without a doubt. The black is black where as here it is a bit washed out but still very good.

So if you want a tv for movies get a plasma, if you want a tv for windows, movies, games get a led.

The closest pricing match between LED-LCD and plasma would be PS51D550 51" FHD R9k - R9.9k vs Samsung UA46D5000/5500 46" FHD also at about R9k. The plasma will blow the LED-LCD out the water at PQ.
Again your opinion (more like trolling ammo) trying to be passed off as fact.

I happen to be in a store today doing some xmas shopping, where they had the whole Samsung range side-by-side each playing the same demo Bluray off same model players. The store was well lighten but I would not call it bright.

Both the PS51D550 and the UAxxD6x00 produce great pictures, but in the store's lighting the LED's picture just has more punch and vibrancy, with the Plasma looking a bit dull & flat (even with cell brightness on max of 20). The plasma however has a more natural (accurate to real life viewing) picture and I'm sure if used in a more dimmly light environment it will also excel.

So from my perspective nothing blows nothing out of any water. The two technologies both have their pros & cons and one should choose the one that matches your viewing preference and environment.

The trouble with a plasma is the glare is pretty bad in well lit area's. You have to compare a plasma and led in a darkish room.

The led doesn't have much glare so for light rooms the plasma may not be for you.

It does excel big time, the motion on a plasma is awesome actually. I was in absa today and that this lcd on the wall and wow the motion on the lcd was flippin horrible. It was a LG but you could see the motion was not right.

What pixel format should i use i have four options, 2 ycb and 2 rgb, i also have something called lcd over drive. Should i fiddle with that?

The only YCB option I have on LA32D550, which is the one I use, is for the 1:1/4:4 pixel mapping ratio or what not.

Check my post - was comparing PS51D550 with LA46D5000/5500.

PQ wise the D5000/5500/6000 have the same UltraClear panels, its just features and engines (or enablement of them) that differ. Coincidentally I'll be able to confirm 1st hand tomorrow when I help my father in law connect the 46D5000 he bought today.

D5000/5500 stands no chance against D550 plasma. Perhaps in a bright room.

ROFL!! Good ol' PlasmaPot. :p

I must agree here with Roman4604, the Samsung 6000/7000 2D/3D LED TVs just look absolutely fantastic. The colors pop (just like on my Galaxy S2) and looks stunning, compared to the plasmas, which look a bit bland and washed out to me.

Me thinks Samsung decided on South Africa as a dumping ground for their old plasmas, without anti-reflective coating & gave PlasmaPot something on the side to play head evangelist for it. :)

Just kidding, PP also recommended the LED TVs for rooms which get some light during the day.
