Ok i not sure if it makes a difference if i download this from the huawei site or if i need a vodafone specific vesion. I have read up on the k3565 specs and it seems it supports 7.2 mbps with a firmware update. any suggestions on where to fine this? vodacom site a search for it takes me to a page to download the latest vmc software.

Not using vmc as its rubbish. MDMA ftw. so all i need to know is how do i go about upgrading the firmware on this thing?

Unless you have some reason that I can't think of, there is no reason to upgrade the firmware.

You may wish to change the dashboard and this depends on it being a K3536 or K3536-Z the first being Huawei and the -Z indicating it's made by ZTE.

The Huawei K3565 is a E160 badged Vodafone and the dashboard upgrade can be found here: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/Huawei/Huawei_E160

This will flash Huawei's Mobile Partner to your K3536 and you will need to manually set up a profile, i.e. Fixed APN internet and dial string *99#

If you have a K3536-Z then you can either use a PC installed ZTE dashboard found here: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/ZTE/Software

or flash a new generic dashboard to the device here: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/ZTE/Dashboards

In either case you will need to manually set up a profile, i.e. Fixed APN internet and dial string *99#

ok i was an idiot. i have a k3520 not a k3565. eyes hadn't focused properly. (thats my story and im sticking to it.) the reason i wanted to up the firmware version was that out of the box it only supported 3.6 but is capable of 7.2.

I got the firmware update from wetpaint and used it and all went well. then tried connecting through MDMA and no joy. went in through vmc lite and got the latest mdma and it worked once but wouldnt disconnect, so went to the voda site and got the full vmc and that works well other than the default setting that auto recconects you when you disconnect (very annoying). but as a side effect of upgrading the vmc dashboard it let win 7 install the drivers for the modem and now mdma works like a charm.

saga over with and i am now happily connecting at 7.2 and being 50 meters from a tower with direct line of sight (not even a tree in the way) im loving it. there goes the interweb budget for the month
