I think as regards p2p - it all depends what kind of data you're looking for. If its 'the latest' whatever that everyone else is after, then your standard p2p clients will often deliver it.
But if you're after very specific types of file-genres (music, film, audio, books, games etc) sometimes it can be a lot easier to find them on areas dedicated to that particular type of file. Like MIRC for instance, on dedicated channels to the 'genre' of your choice.
Or DC++ where you can find entire Hubs dedicated to the specific 'genre' you're into. I've found a lot of the other p2p networks are very hit n miss at times, if you're hunting for a whole bunch of different files from a specific genre. (eg: C&W music or Cajun or Blues
Whereas DC++ has Hubs dedicated to each of those genres, and you'll find more options that you thought possible.. )
So for myself, I live on DC++ hubs that have only what I'm into, so there's little pushing and pulling and trying to deal with uploads to others, while getting what I want. Its much quieter and easier.
As dablakmark8 says, be VERY CAREFUL with the kazaa/emule etc type of p2p networks - I've found them dodgy as hell, and not able to deliver the goodies that I need - whereas my fave DC++ has given me no problems at all.
