I have Ubuntu 9.10. Is it KDE or GNOME? Where can I find out?

Gnome

Ubuntu comes standard with the Gnome interface unless you have specifically added the KDE interface.

Kubuntu comes standard with the KDE interface

Ubuntu is GNOME - looks like Windows2000

Kubuntu is KDE - looks like Win7 /Vista

* Personal preference. If you like your eye-kandy, go KDE. If you want a functional, clean desktop - GNOME.

Another one is XFCE but its so similar to Gnome these days so not worth mentioning.

This is a bit misleading, IMO.

The power of these desktop environments is that they are highly customisable.

With emphasis on the looks like. They diverge a lot more than they converge...

Agreed, though you have to admit that KDE is a more customizable (if you don't wanna mess with gconf-editor).

Agreed. KDE, IMO, provides more customisable settings in GUI. But who wouldnt want to mess with gconf-editor? :D

Can I get mine to look like KDE or be KDE?

Absolutely. The easiest way, if you're used to using the command-line by now, you can simply open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop
then enter your sudo password, and you're off. Bear in mind that this will be a fairly large download; around 400MB.

You could also install JUST KDE (kubuntu-desktop will install KDE and all the applications that come bundled with kubuntu; hence the large download), which would be much smaller.

If you'd like it to look like KDE, the best way is to just install KDE :)

Personally, I'm a fan of Gnome. After using KDE for many years, the transition to KDE4 just put me off for life. The default Gnome setup is nice and clean, and I can make it look exactly how I want.

+1

i've come back to KDE with a vengance. when the inital move to KDE4 was made I wasn't to happy. But that was primarily because those early KDE4s should have been called beta versions (or alphas for that matter). Since 4.3 I have been extremely happy with it.

Prefer Gnome to KDE, but then again haven't touched KDE since 4 sooo it's been awhile. Gnome just feels cleaner.

I've tried KDE briefly and I can't get into it. Gnome just seems cleaner, less cluttered and more intuitive to me. That having been said, I can see the appeal of KDE.
