I have an 06 2.2D SE x-trail. I've mostly enjoyed driving the car but I've had some maintenance issues which have left me wondering if i should hang onto the car or get something else.

At 6000km the turbo went, and this was replaced under warranty, now at around 78000KM i had to have the fuel rail and injectors completely replaced.. In-between those two (major) incidents I had no other complaints. The car has now done close to 80000KM.

So my question is.. do I keep the car since it's paid up and fully serviced, or look for something potentially more reliable?

Been thinking maybe a 2nd hand petrol fortuner or land cruiser is the way to go?
I've heard the petrol toyotas are very reliable, anyone have any comments or experience, or other recommendations?

Just found an 07 fortuner 4x4 v6 with all the extras and 85000km on the clock for around 279k which is quite tempting.
Also a '10 forrester with 20000km for 279 - But I still haven't made up my mind.

My basic requirements are 4x4, petrol (i don't want the headache of maintaining a diesel again) preferably automatic.

So, any advice from those experienced in these matters much appreciated, thanks!

Just to save you some time on this thread:
Fazda: Get a forrester
JK8: Get a polo gti
ALFAHOLIC: Get a golf gti
PostmanPot: Get a plasma
Dolby: Get an LCD
Rouxenator: bla bla bla I think you should look at the suzuki swift bla bla bla jd powers bla chev spark bla bla nokia bla bla opel bla etc

Toyotas are reliable and (touch wood) you can't go wrong with a hilux hey. That's probably the only toyota I'd ever buy. Fortuner same chassis as hilux but no rear leaf suspension, but that depends how serious you are about actual 4x4ing.

Only 1 caveat on your intended purchase - spend a month fuelling a 4.0 V6 and you might just long for your diesel headaches again.

:D - hilarious! (Although roux would add… get a nokia :p )

Yeah looking at Hilux too, I'm not a serious 4x4 guy but I do the west coast or moz at least twice a year so good to have for those occasions.

I'm self employed and work from home, I have no daily commute etc, so my fuel costs are quite low (except for the annual treks out west etc)

My mom's 2002 2.0 x-trail is just about to hit 200,000km, and she has not had any major problems. Its been a dream actually, very reliable, easy to drive, relatively economical, plenty of space etc. She is going to keep it until it starts to cost a lot to maintain, but its perfect for now :)

High mileage diesels can start to become expensive to maintain, and its no doubt that our shoddy diesel quality is one of the contributing factors. But I cannot speak personally about the x-trail diesel in this regard.

If it were me, I would sell the x-trail as its no longer under warranty. The v6 Fortuner is a real gas guzzler, so take that into consideration (a friend of mine has one).

I would certainly consider a Forester (oh won't Fazda be pleased :p )

Others to consider:

Suzuki Grand Vitara
Chev Captiva
Honda CR-V
Hyundai Tuscon
New generation X-trail
Renault Koleos (same underpinnings as the X-trail)

Have I left any out?

Not a regular here but saw recent article and response from Toyota SA about buying a car from Non Approved dealer. The warranty is not honoured as per the Toyota Book of Life.

Thanks - heard good things about the petrol x-trail range - will look into that.

good to know, thanks.

Nissan Qashqai diesel 4x4 is very nice too IMO.

I think I've reached the end of my diesel tolerance :-)

Fazda told someone the other day he can get them a brand new 2011 for R289k.

Forester has kind of dull looks but not too bad, some people kind of like that maybe even you coming from a X-trail :) Bulletproof engines, ground clearance, AWD, good build quality. Good deal.

yeah the x-trail is nothing flash but the forester is even more boring imo, both have a bit of that soccer-mom thing going :o - well maybe Fazda will step in here and give me some options.

if you are looking for something good looking you need to try the new Kia Sportage:
2010-kia-sportage-3.jpg

Beautiful
Good engines
Nicely executed interior
Feature packed
Long service plan and warranty

If you are into proper bundu bashing it might be a bit low.

I sat inside an ix35 yesterday and was not impressed by the interior. Very plasticky. Not sure if the Sportage is the same.

Yeah, the Sportage is very nice. I had a look at one at Kia Randburg, and came away extremely impressed. The interior quality is MUCH better than I was expecting. It had a very premium feel to it.

The model I had a look at was the top-of-the-range diesel 4x4 auto, and it had a very high specification. The coolest feature is the little hidden lcd screen in the rearview mirror, which suddenly appears when you shift into reverse :D

Its definitely worth a look! But as Brawler said, its not for proper bundu-bashing

Although the cars are based on the same chassis and engines the interiors are very different. Sportage has a nice interior.
