Need some advice.
I was looking at getting an electric blanket, for the bed.
How much electricity do these items use? Queen size bed.

Another thing, would you recommend a gas heater or an oil heater that uses electricity?
How much gas do these units use on average?

Thanks

Electric blankets is the best way to keep warm without heaters. Gas heaters ....mmmm my sisters gas heater lasts about two weeks I think....but gas is rather expensive now...so not sure how it compares to electric. Oil heaters takes forever to heat up and when they do the heat they radiat seems rather localized...so you need to curl up around it to stay warm....not good for large rooms at all.

Thanks bud, I agree with you on those points, seems gas heaters can get very expensive.
Surely an electric blanket cannot consume so much?
What does one look for when buying one? In terms of consumption, will go to Makro to buy it

I wouldn't recommend a gas heater, oil heaters works best... With gas heaters you always smell the gas... Not cool.

oil heater's may take forever to heat up maybe 1hour or so but once they run, they run nice and hot :)

But I would think the electricity consumed is high on these heaters no?

hasn't the price of gas been capped by the govt now?
I seem to remember that being published recently.

Anyways, we use a combination of gas, electricity and wood burning fire place.

I just put it on like 15 mins before I go to bed and switch it off when I get in.

Yes you are right actually. Forgot about that. I think gas heaters works best....specially for large rooms. They heat the room in a jiffy. And I like the smell of gas! (the petroleum kind...not homosapien!) :-)

The electric blanket? Any suggestions on make and which one to chose, that doesn't use too much power? I assume some use less than others.

mmm I think they pretty much use the same amount regardless of make. I bought mine at Clicks a few years ago and it is still going strong. Electric blankets are energy efficient by default I think marine. But perhaps check if they indicate the wattage or something on the packaging. Not sure how it works.

I remember my old one for a single bed used to claim to use "less than a 60w light bulb" not sure about this, but that was the claim.

Definitely the best way to keep warm this winter. (and cheapest) considering losses from gas or oil heaters in heating an entire room.

Luckily I just need a blanket. Duck down or something along those lines.

Electric blanket works wonders and uses very little elec.
Gas heaters are the best in terms of heating speed. It is also good as it produces water but bad if u keep it on for long as it eats O2 and gives CO.
Usually only use gas heaters for 1-2 hrs - it works well.
Oils heaters take some time to heat up and eat electricity.
I use gas for lounge and kitchen - bottle lasts abt 6 weeks and costs abt R200 to refill (not sure what the price is now).
Use oil for bedroom.

Awesome thanks so much. Very informative

Comparative heating cost:
LPG = 0.76 R/MJ (R19.75x/kg and 26MJ/kg)
Eskom = 1.86 R/MJ R0.5168/(kw/hr) (1kw/hr = 3.6MJ)

I sleep with one duvet in winter.
No electric blanket, no heaters, underfloor heating off when I sleep (hardly ever use it), normal PJs boxers and a Tshirt...

its the best duvet in the world!

I just make sure I go to bed 15 minutes after the missus and then push her to the other side.

Works for toilet seats too. :D

Haven't even considered getting another electric blanket since we got a really nice down duvet.
