Keeping warm this winter

stay away from the oil heaters.
they chow electricity. :wtf:

found out the hard way last winter.

Sorry excuse my ignorance but what is rand /MJ?

Rands per Mega Joule. (cost of energy) One can also use Rands per kiloWatt hour. R /(kw/hr)

Sorry, I should have written R 0.76 /MJ <<perhaps this makes more sense

In summary (ignoring losses or (in)efficiencies of the heaters) Electricity (Eskom) is 144% more expensive than LPG gas. (almost one and a half times more)

My electric blanket was my best buy for 2010. Bought mine from Boardmans ... turn it on for 30 mins before retiring and you'll sleep like a baby this winter!

And thats before the damn 2nd & 3rd increases hit.

Seriously people we need to stay away from electricity chowing things, not only due to costs but also for the country as a whole. 8% safety margin on the grid, minus growth, minus the 1,5% that Eskom just destroyed in the generator explosion. Keep in mind that the sht hits the fan *before* that reaches 0%.

Gas seems to be more expensive. We use about R200 a month on electricity and about R600 a month on gas. That's with one oil heater going all the time and a gas heater on most nights.

Definitely the best value is the low power wall panel heater that we bought for the study (which by the way is also always on) and although it needs to be on permanently and takes about a day to warm the room, is incredibly effective. We also use the oil heater in a large loft which means it is effective in open or large areas.

Part of it is that you have to burn a lot of gas all at once but the electric heaters provide a sustained heating solution. Plus you can turn the oil heater down quite a bit but the gas heaters only have 'hot', hotter' and 'hottest'!
