An explosion at a power station in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, has left most suburbs in the area without power on Friday, the municipality said.

"Engineers are still inside the station working on fixing the problem. It is labour intensive work that will take time," said Ekurhuleni metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

Affected areas include Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Bonaero Park, and parts of Pomona and Glen Marais.

The explosion occurred at Aston Manor substation at around 2am on Friday.

The cause of the explosion was not yet known, Gadebe said.

POWER OUTAGE CAUSED BY CABLE FAULTS

An explosion at a power station in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, was possibly caused by cable faults, Ekurhuleni metro municipality said on Saturday.

"... At this stage it looks like the Bonaero Park feeder cables caused the fault," spokesman Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

He said the findings were based on preliminary investigations, with engineers to confirm the findings once new equipment had been installed and the repair process was completed.

All the substations' maintenance schedules were up to date, Gadebe said.

The explosion occurred at Aston Manor substation around 2am on Friday, leaving most suburbs in the area without power.

Affected areas included Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Bonaero Park, and parts of Pomona and Glen Marais.

If that is true, we are in for one heck of a time! I think we all know who to thank....

They've got my sympathy. When this happened in Alberton, we were without power for a week. The ANC mayor of Ekurhuleni came to the town hall and made a show and ignored everyone's questions. Of course we were told to submit claims to their offices (we submitted one for petrol and LP gas), which were all repudiated (obviously). In the third world, you're on your own.

Ja, it's like they all suddenly hit their EOL.

It's almost as if they've been ignored completely (in favour of parties and BMWs) for the past 20 years and 3 months.

It's called dark Africa for a reason. The majority are not ready for the modern world and can't sustain the mechanisms and infrastructure that underlie it.

Having recently spent some time in the modern world, if you want the modern world and all its wonderful benefits, you won't get it here; you will have to go to it.

PROGRESS IN KEMPTON PARK SUBSTATION REPAIRS

Repairs to a substation in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, are 75 percent complete, the Ekurhuleni metro municipality said on Sunday.

"We are very happy that the work at the substation is within schedule.," spokesman Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

Several areas of Kempton Park have been without the power supply since around 2am on Friday, when the Aston Manor substation exploded, possibly due to a cable fault.

"What remains at this stage is the commissioning and testing of all equipment."

Panels and cables were successfully installed at the damaged power station on Sunday.

Affected areas included Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Bonaero Park, and parts of Pomona and Glen Marais.
