Koeberg Interchange / N1 overpass now open!

Drove to work this morning and saw the large N1 overpass was open to traffic.

Before, traffic to the N1 and Koeberg / Sectrion roads filtered down to 1 lane - Now I can get to Koeberg Road without having all the N1 traffic filtering through the old shoddy intersection! :D

Been waiting a long time for this!

Now they just need to finish the roadworks on the M5...

Yep on my way to canal walk last night was pleasantly suprised it was open, at fusking last. Probably the most useful bit of road construction in a long time.
 
WOOT! I don't have to use the stretch of road any more, but for years it was the bane of my life!
Well done to all concerned.

Can you believe those days are really over!! And I'm amazed how a simple paint job on the R27/N1 intersection at the docks entrance solved that pushing in problem - the mind boggles.

Indeed and it actually speeds up the traffic.

They started construction at Koeberg IC in the beginning of 2008. They should've started 30yrs back! :p

Can't believe how shocking some of the designs of Cape Towns roads are.

Have you ever seen on-ramps on a highway (N1 and N2 Hospital Bend) which join in the FAST lane???? It's been like that for decades.

Glad they finally did something about it.

Not sure who originally designed the highways back in the 60's or whenever, but they fudged up big time.
I heard that the old highways in Cape Town were built before South Africa had an official highway construction code - although the highways were eventually upgraded over the years, many parts of on-ramps, cambers and bends were left as is closer to the city as it was more difficult and expensive to change / remove or demolish existing infrastructure.

Amen to that... when that is done it will take 20 mins off my trip home !

Original estimations for completion were November this year, but lets see what happens.

Worst thing about the M5, is driving next to a massive truck, not knowing whether he'll side-swipe you or not on the insanely narrow lanes...
 
Great news! Will make my trip so much quicker. Wonder if there are any plans for Paarden Eiland bridge that connects Marine Drive and Table Bay Boulevard. It's a crazy bottleneck. Then there's the Plattekloof / Chevron Refinery where it takes an hour to move 100 m during "rush" hour
 
A bitter old drunk man designed the original Koeberg Interchange. :D

Koeberg Interchange was designed by Willie van der Plooy – a nasty, bitter individual with a hell of a temper, a drink problem and complex psychological issues including a vendetta against all forms of road transport after he failed his driving test six times in a single month. Legend has it that he hid himself away and studied long and hard to become a civil engineer, then got his own back on an unsuspecting Cape Town driving public one evening by downing 6 bottles of Klippies, popping a couple of tabs of LSD and coming up with a new design for the crossroads of the N1 and the M5.

Some say he invoked Beelzebub through ritual worship and got him to fart on the plans, such is the barbed, twisted, evil nature of the junction. These days, tourists and locals alike flock from miles around to sit in massive queues and gaze miserably upon the fetid industrial heartland of Cape Town awaiting their turn on the aging concrete spirals.
And van der Plooy is no more, assassinated by terrorist group The Provisional AA in England for coming up with the concept of the M25 in retaliation for being charged an extortionate taxi fare on a trip to London in 1958.

So it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for me. Stick a few decent CDs in the multichanger, bang up the aircon, sit back and crawl to work up the M5 instead of up the M3.

It's hell driving on that road now. I have to filter through the traffic on my bike (if I leave early) and it's damn near impossible. Then, of course, I have no problem passing the trucks, but the cars do. Just about everyone refuses to overtake the truck, because there's always the chance he'll move about 1cm to the right and crush you. I just seriously hope they're not going to make the lanes that narrow when they're done...

I believe they are busy upgrading the N7 Plattekloof bridge to a dual carriageway both ways. Will probably take another year or so.
