Are these a good option for exercise at home? What would be a good starting weight?

They are quite popular now and I do seem to enjoy using them.
Asking a weight is a bit tough, because for me it varies depending on what i am doing, by quite a bit.

Do you have a VA contract? They have at most gyms, maybe try them out for 1 session and see what weights you feel comfortable with?

My wife has a 5kg one that she uses at home, which I think is probably a good weight for somebody just starting out.
Just don't drop it on a tile floor :(

Depends on what you are doing. I started on 8s if it makes any difference.

Why don't you start with a few classes and only buy when you've reached a bit of a plateau strength wise. Otherwise you'll be buying a new one every week.

Are there classes? I don't have a gym subscription.

Where abouts are you? If you in Durban I know a great place that does classes

I would recommend going to a few classes before you invest in buying them for use at home. Being successful with Kettlebells is largely about the correct technique, which I think is quite hard to get right by yourself - a trainer would get your form correct, if you aren't doing it correctly you are possibly just wasting your time and setting yourself up for serious injury.

Also by attending some classes you get a better understanding of what it's about and whether or not its the right form of excercise for you. Know a lot of people who are addicted and swear by kettlebells, but I went to one class and almost passed out, was seriously hard!

I used them at gym on Tuesday for the first time.
I tried the double hand swing from between legs to perpendicular to my chest with arms extended x 20. I only used an 8 and wow I could feel my back muscles work!

Then tried the one arm lift but I think I wasn't doing it right or an 8 was too light as it wasn't that much of a work out.

But I can definitely see why people love them.

Standard men's starting weight is 16kg, so you guys doing 8kg are really under performing.
