Karachi - Younus Khan has resigned as captain of Pakistan over match-fixing allegations made against the team by a senior member of parliament.

Younus submitted his resignation to the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ejaz Butt during a hearing of the National Assembly standing committee on sports in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The hearing was called to discuss the performance of the team in the Champions Trophy after the committee chairman, Jamshed Dasti, said on television he had evidence Pakistan had deliberately under-performed against Australia and New Zealand.

Pakistan lost to Australia in the group stage of the Sept. 22-Oct. 5 tournament, and after qualifying for the latter stages lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals.

"Yes I have submitted my resignation because I am disgusted by these match-fixing allegations made against me and the team," Younus told Reuters.

"I have told the chairman to go through my resignation and read my point of view."

Sources close to Younus also said his letter indicated he wanted to take a break from cricket and would not be available for the upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia.

Younus was appointed captain early this year after the board removed Shoaib Malik as skipper after a one-day home series defeat to Sri Lanka in January.

Younus led Pakistan to victory in the Twenty20 World Cup in England in July before announcing his retirement from the version of the sport, insisting he was too old.

Wonder why we never hear about match fixing in rugby ? The sport is not exempt from that.

It's a BS story apparently, he's just resigning because he's upset.

They gave that game away, then they decided to play the game in the last 5 overs.

Even the game against NZ. They allowed the singles.... how stupid.

PCB hopes Khan resumes captaincy

Pakistan cricket chief Ijaz Butt will attempt to persuade Younis Khan to reconsider his resignation as captain in protest at match-fixing allegations.

"Younis' life got disturbed after these false allegations, his family members - including his brother - are also not talking to him," Butt said.
Pakistan won the Twenty20 World Cup under Khan's captaincy before the Pakistan skipper quit from the shortest form of the game and Shahid Afridi was made Pakistan's T20 captain.

First they all but force the poor fella to take a long walk off the short plank, and now they want him back at all costs. I'm sorry, but who'd want to captain or coach this team under present circumstances.

None of the good he achieved is remembered. :(
