Kia Niro Hybrid

Kia Motors America (KMA) unveiled the enhanced Niro Hybrid. The popular and award-winning compact crossover receives several exterior enhancements for its mid-cycle refresh, including new projector-type headlights and fog lamps, a new diamond-pattern grille and dual chevron-shaped LED daytime running lights. The rear faux skid plate is wider and more pronounced, the rear LED combination lights have more technological appeal than previous, and there are new 16-inch and 18-inch alloy wheel designs.

"It's difficult to improve on a winning formula," said Michael Cole, president, KMA, "but we're always striving to improve every product we sell and the enhanced 2020 Niro provides new owners the latest and greatest while retaining the value, utility and performance of the original Niro."

Inside, the new Niro display is more streamlined, incorporating a re-styled 7-inch instrument cluster with improved drive mode graphics and 8-inch standard touchscreen display, or optional navigation with a 10.25-inch screen and Harman/Kardon premium audio system, all with the easy to use interface Kia is famous for. Optional paddle shifters for a sportier driving experience and active regenerative braking control, optional electronic parking brake, and optional mood lighting with six different colors wrap up the interior mods.

Kia e-Niro: extra supply of upgraded EV for 2020

Korean firm tweaks popular electric SUV with new tech – and promises a "major ramp-up" in supply

Kia will introduce a raft of upgrades to the e-Niro electric SUV for 2020 – and has promised a “major ramp-up” in supply of it and the new Soul EV.

The e-Niro went on sale in Britain earlier this year, but demand for the car greatly outstripped supply, with the entire UK provision selling out within weeks. Kia says that it has a 3000-strong waiting list for the EV, which offers around 280 miles of range.

Kia Niro 1.6 GDi PHEV 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

Maybe, because this facelifted Niro adds a small amount of lustre to what has always been a well-rounded offering: this is a potentially hugely economical powertrain in a well-sorted car, laden with kit and backed by a seven-year warranty.

But if your decision is financially driven, as is likely, you do need to consult a calculator, because you’ll have to cover a lot of miles or enjoy a lot of lower VED or company car bills to truly extract value from choosing the PHEV over the hybrid.

Alternatively, if your motives are altogether greener or company car tax focused then you might also want to consider the excellent all-electric e-Niro instead, available with a 280-ish mile real world range and epically low running costs for a further £5k.

Even if you do conclude it is for you, then you must consider the opposition, not least the Skoda Superb PHEV, which starts from £31,970.

How car makers must rue the loss of the plug-in hybrid grant, which swung the cost-benefit equation rather more in their - and consumers’ - favour.

Kia e-Niro 64kWh 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you’re homing in on a family-sized electric crossover, frankly you’re crazy if you don’t do the Kia deal. This is still the best practical electric car proposition going – for the performance (0-60mph in 7.8sec), for the range (accurately claimed at 282 miles) and for that seven-year warranty.

Small wonder it has been so difficult to buy an e-Niro. And with the advent of this improved 2020 edition, it's unlikely to get easier.

All that being said, if the smaller battery brings the e-Niro into your purchasing orbit, you should consider it. This car remains a solid stepping-off point into the world of EVs, though the new price-point does also brings uncomfortable competition.

Both the Peugeot e-2008 and Volkswagen ID 3 do more to entice at a similar price. And then there's the upcoming Skoda Enyaq, which could well steal the show at in the sub-£35,000 class.

Kia introduces new 64kWh e-Niro eligible for £2500 grant

Long-range version of electric crossover is said to offer longest range of any sub-£35,000 E

Kia has introduced a new mid-rung variant of its e-Niro EV which makes the 64kWh range-topping battery pack available in the sub-£35,000 price bracket, and therefore eligible for the government's £2500 plug-in car grant.

Last week, the government cut the plug-in car grant from £3000 to £2500, and lowered the threshold from £50,000 to £35,000 - meaning several electric cars at the lower end of the price spectrum became ineligible for the subsidy. The e-Niro range was effectively cut in two, with the shorter-range 39kWh variant remaining eligible, but the longer-range 64kWh car excluded from the grant.

Now, Kia has added the new e-Niro '2' Long Range, which pairs elements of the entry-level trim package with the bigger battery of more expensive variants. It is available to order now, and customer deliveries will begin in July.

New 2022 Kia Niro to bring fresh design, overhauled interior

Big-selling crossover gears up for a second coming, with styling influenced by HabaNiro concept

The Kia Niro will return for a second generation at the end of the current car's life cycle, with a bold new design inspired by 2019's radical HabaNiro concept.

Due for a reveal later this year – just five years after today's car appeared for the first time – the next-gen Niro will adopt a more recognisably SUV-inspired silhouette, as well as a raft of cues that link it to the brand's newer models.

Kia is in the midst of a radical, design-led transformation of its product line-up. The all-new EV6 electric flagship and next-generation Sportage SUV give clues as to what to expect from future models, including the Mk2 Niro, which clearly makes a marked departure from its predecessor, despite the camouflage of this prototype obscuring the key details.

Some of the HabaNiro concept's more radical design cues (its butterfly-hinged doors, contrasting front end and prominent, 4x4-style skidplate) will not be carried over to the production car, but some key differences for the second-generation car are visible.

2022 Kia Niro gets concept-inspired refresh, new interior

Bold styling and efficiency boosts will be features of the second-gen SUV, due after EV6

Kia is readying a dramatically restyled, second-generation version of its popular Niro crossover for a launch in 2022, featuring heavy design influence from 2019’s outlandish HabaNiro concept.

Destined for a reveal later this year, the Mk2 Niro will retain its hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure-electric powertrains, but it will be set apart from today’s model by its more overtly SUV-inspired silhouette and overhauled interior.

The new Niro will arrive soon after the EV6 electric flagship and Sportage SUV as the latest in a series of boldly designed models forging a new image for the South Korean brand.

Whereas the EV6 uses the new E-GMP electrical architecture with 800V capacity and vehicle-to-load charging functionality, the electric variant of the Niro will have an updated version of the current car’s hardware. The latest platform is reserved for vehicles in Kia’s new family of EV-badged electric-only cars.

This means the Peugeot e-2008 rival will be technically similar to the current car, which is available with either a 39kWh battery or a 64kWh unit, giving a maximum of 282 miles of range on the WLTP cycle. Efficiency-boosting upgrades for the second iteration are likely to take this official range past the 300-mile mark, matching the recently updated Hyundai Kona Electric. The 4x4 HabaNiro concept hinted at the potential for a driven rear axle, at least on top-rung variants, but it is important to note that it sat atop a bespoke EV chassis.

2022 Kia Niro officially previewed ahead of Thursday unveiling

Big-selling crossover will be reinvented with styling influenced by the radical HabaNiro concept

Kia will unwrap the second-generation Niro this Thursday, the latest in a series of important unveilings from the marque as it transitions to becoming a "sustainable mobility solutions provider".

Just a week after showing its radical EV9 large SUV concept, Kia will present the production-ready version of its reinvented compact crossover at the Seoul Mobility Show.

The Niro is a hugely important car for Kia, accounting for 61,000 sales in the UK alone since its 2016 launch and spawning the e-Niro, the brand's first electric production car and the precursor to a whole family of bespoke EVs.

Unlike the new EV6, however, the e-Niro uses an adapted version of a combustion car's platform, and this is expected to be the case for the Mk2 model.

Whether Kia will continue to offer a full suite of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains remains to be confirmed.

New Kia Niro crossover teased with bolder look for 2022

The Kia Niro, currently not sold in South Africa, straddles the lines between section of the market between hybrid and fully-electric and the second-generation model is imminent, with Kia set to reveal it in full this coming Thursday.

The teaser images released on Monday show a bolder look for the midsize Kia model, which is expected to mimic its predecessor by offering conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully-electric versions.

According to Autocar, this means it will continue with a similar architecture to today’s car, rather than moving over to the more premium E-GMP ‘EV only’ platform that underpins the Tesla-rivalling Kia EV6.

Kia says the new Niro’s design takes inspiration from the Habaniro concept of 2019, promising an “adventure ready” aesthetic and two-tone body colouring.

The interior of the new Niro has an unconventional asymmetric dash that combines horizontal and diagonal forms to realise ‘Opposites United’ design cues, Kia says, as well as realising practical and eco-friendly construction.
