Kia Sonet

Any update on ETA of your car . what Order process did you follow . Seriously considering the EX also

Difficult to say, apparently allocation will be done tomorrow and stock is arriving 30 Jan - 2Feb, but this can be delayed. I am waiting patiently here. The price did go up in the meantime but I paid the R1000 December to reserve my order on the old price. I just went to the dealer, test drive the LX (EX was not available to drive) and placed my order and got it approved with the bank. Was very straight forward for me.

I managed to snap up the dealer demo as per post #96.
I've been driving the car for around 2 weeks, it is the EX CVT. I'm very very pleased with it.

So you signed a offer to purchase ?

REVIEW | The Kia Sonet 1.5 LX might be an entry-level car but it comes with everything

  • Kia's budget-oriented Sonet 1.5LX will resonate with you if you want a new vehicle that offers space and features for a reasonable price.
  • The manual gearbox took some time to get used to in stop-go traffic, but there's a CVT version available.
  • Our test car had a strange intermittent brake shudder that affected its composure when applying brakes from 120km/h.
The only real challenge I picked up on our test Sonet was a brake shudder that would intermittently appear depending on what speed I was decelerating from. When applying medium to hard braking from 120km/h, for example, the car shuddered immensely in one of my tests. I tried this test a few times in a controlled environment, and it shook more under braking the hotter the front discs got.

The car had around 2 000km on it, so it was still new, so I suspect that the brakes were not bedded-in correctly when the vehicle was initially run-in or the first few drivers of the car took it to carwashes after driving. If you put cold water on hot discs in these budget cars particularly, they will warp, so keep that in mind.

Overall, you need to take this Sonet for a spin if you're shopping for a compact vehicle and don't want to spend more than R6 000 per month on it. I mentioned it being a bit challenging to use as a daily in heavy traffic with six-speed manual box, but this is not a deal-breaker for me as stock challenges continue to affect all the automakers.

I just got a call from Kia in George.
They have a red CVT model available. It was on order for a client who bought another vehicle in the meantime.

If anyone is interested they can phone Marianka at Kia George.
Don't think it will be available for long though.

Is Marianka hot?
Only met her once when I popped into Kia when I was on holiday in George to see if they have stock.
They were all sold out but I asked that they put my name on the waiting list.

Late 40's
3 kids that are all finished with school
Have a slight "Kia New Car" odour

I say go for it .....

If you had to compare her to a KIA is she a picanto, seltos or more in the santa fe class?

Read this article this morning and it says "It's also lovely that Kia's thrown in a wireless Qi charging pad in the centre console to keep phone batteries topped up." Surely that's not right... Not even the EX derivative has wireless charging or am I missing something?

Yeah, no wireless charger but a handy USB charge port right at the center console. I managed to get a 10cm USB to lightening cable with right angles at both ends and it works really well - there is no excess cable so it is neat.

The wireless Carplay is awesome.

I'm not bothered about wireless charging as much as wireless Carplay so I'm glad that comes standard. Have you had any issues with your iPhone disconnecting while using Carplay? In the showroom the screen looked responsive, have you found any lagging on specific apps/uses?

In the more than a month that I have had it and 2000km driven, I only had Carplay disconnect once while using it. It happened right after I received a call. My phone was still connected via bluetooth but Carplay did not want to connect. It reconnected straight away the next time I started the car.

As soon as I start the car, Carplay connects. The Kia's display has a link for Carplay and a quick link that takes you straight to maps, so no need to first go into Carplay and then go to maps. You can customise these links and layouts in the setup.

I have tested Waze, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Tidal, iMessage, Whatsapp and Podcasts. I have also used MS Teams in Carplay to join conference calls. They all work well with no lag - obviously as long as your 3G/LTE/5G mobile connection is solid. I have switched to Maps from Waze as I prefer the screen layout on the Sonet's display. Sending sms' and whatsapp messages via Siri using the handsfree option is a breeze. I use that daily while driving.

Thanks man it's nice to hear an actual owner's experience. I see you drive the EX CVT, what fuel consumption are you averaging? Seems like Kia is looking at releasing the GT line in Feb/March, would be interested to see the price difference, my thumbsuck guess R390k+
All I want added to the current offering is curtain airbags but THAT's where they decided to cut costs.

I average around 8.5 as my driving is mainly getting my son to school and back at the moment while I am still working from home. This is bumper to bumper, stop street to robot stuff and peak hour. This is totally acceptable to me. My Honda Ballade 1.5 CVT was above in 10 and my wife's Honda CRV 2.0 is around 12 for the same commute.
Doing 120km/h on the freeway consumes around 5.9. If I cruise at 100km/h it comes down to 5.4. That is pretty awesome.

The CVT gearbox on the Sonet is an absolute joy. It is the smoothest gearbox I have ever had in a car. If you do want to overtake quickly you can put it into manual mode where there are 8 pre set "gears" that you can run through.

If the GT line does make an appearance, I may be swayed to trade for the higher spec'd model. I believe the extras include curtain airbags, full climate control and some GT trim, LED lights, sunroof, keyless go and larger 10" infotainment display and also leather. I'm not really interested in a 1L Turbo engine or a DCT auto box though - which i believe the GT line has. I'm a CVT fan. Agreed that GT pricing will probably be just below R400k. The GT line Seltos is R499k, a bigger car and 1.4L turbo. So anything above R400k the Seltos GT may cannibalise Sonet GT sales.

The Seltos GT is priced R504k nowadays. If you look at sister company Hyundai's pricing, the Creta 1.4T (which would be the Seltos GT equivalent) is priced R502k. Now look at the top spec Venue, which is priced just under R420k. Therefore, a Sonet GT could very well be priced above R400k, unless it is specced much more spartan than the Venue Glide 1.0T.

You meant to say the Sonet GT may cannibalise Seltos GT sales, I assume?
I recon if the Sonet GT is over R400k, people may rather opt to put in some extra money and buy the larges Seltos GT. The Sonet is selling like hot cakes at the moment and Kia can't keep up so there is no discount on offer. When I spoke to the salesman they are willing to offer discount on the Seltos. So with the discount the Seltos GT (or even higher spec'd non-GT Seltos) is going to be pretty close to Sonet GT prices.

All speculation though.

I had a look at a look at the Hyundai's. Personally I would rather buy the Creta than the Venue if the difference is only R80k.

The Sonet is a fantastic drive. It is super smooth, the 16 inch wheels absorbs all the bad road impacts (I have found 2.4bars to be the perfect tyre firmness) and the driving position is nice and high. It is great city car with enough space for a family.

I stand corrected but W.CarPlay is a pretty stand out feature in this class.

Definitely, can't remember which one but between the Hyundai Venue, Toyota Urban Cruiser and VW T-Cross I know at least one of them don't support CarPlay wirelessly, and they're in the same-to-higher price bracket than the Sonet.
